    Mass Storage Controller driver issue

Hi, I have this issue going on since i installed windows 7--32 bit on a new partition.
Firstly In the 'device manager' I see 'Mass Storage Controller' which shows me a yellow sign of exclaimation & the following message pops up when 'right clicked' on 'properties' ;''The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver''

Secondly; In the 'device manager' below the 'Mass Storage Controller' name/driver it shows a name/driver called 'Unknown Device' again with yellow sign of exclaimation as mentioned above & When 'right clicked' on its properties I get the same error message as mentioned above.

Thirdly;None of the External buttons on my laptop for web cam, volume etc present are working. They only work with my vista OS but not with windows 7.

Now What drivers do u recommend & Where can i find the specific drivers for windows 7 beta to function without any further driver issues or other issues as mentioned above

Also When i plug in my usb external hard drive it shows me a message ''Do u want to scan the drive or continue without scanning'' & i tried both the ways/methods but still my files stored in usb e.xternal hard drive drive freeze & therefore dont respond immediately when i try to view or open them. Did reinstall, update everything but couldnt solve it, Would really appreciate any help. Thanks & looking forward for it.

Hi googler and welcome to Se7en Forums

Sorry for the delay in replying. What is the make and model number of your motherboard. This sounds like a driver issue. Does everything work in your Vista installation? If you have the same bit-version, i.e. 32-bit or 64-bit of BOTH Vista and W7, then you should be able to use the appropriate Vista driver.

Your external drive's software hasn't been installed on 7 yet. This is why you are seeing the yellow marked other device item in the DM there. You likely still have the factory Fat32 partition on as well.

There's generally an autorun file seen on the drive itself but you want to consider converting the Fat volume over to ntfs to preserve the files on it now while still making it readily available for 7. How To Convert FAT/FAT32 to NTFS: MediaSmart Home

1.I saw the error message before plugging any external devices.
2.The metallic buttons[volume, av mode, play, pause, stop, mute] on my laptop are not working with windows 7 but only work with vista.
3.I have used the drivermax , can u tell me a better alternative to make these work. thanks

The beta releases of 7 now see a new option in the right click menu called "troubleshoot compatibilty".

Once you find the installer's executable try right clicking on the file while in 7 and selecting the option and then simply choose Vista or XP SP2 when the list of previous versions comes up. That will see new registry entries to remember the compatibility mode.

The other thing you can try there is right click on the item and select the uninstall option followed by a system restart. That should see 7 reinstall the drivers from it's own driver base. In fact that would likely be the thing to try first if you already saw the installer menu appear initially. When going to install the beta you may have simply ran into an incomplete install where not everything went on well or something missing in the burn to disk.

The manufacturer's support site for what few 7 beta drivers can be found at this time. You have to remember one thing namely that 7 is beta not a finished retail/oem product already seeing all types of drivers available to start with.

Most of us are simply using the Vista even XP not 7 drivers available to get those working especially for addons like web cams. To get the 64bit beta online here I first have to use XP 64 or Vista 64bit drivers for a new adapter.

If you rush into a beta expect beta reality there. Some things are simply going to be not available if the existing drivers won't work. This is the one thing too many don't even look at while expecting everything to work like a finished product with full support.

All anyone here can do is offer some tips from things learned as we go along. I got a tuner card working on 7 here with XP drivers installed. Someone here running 7 on the exact same make and model laptop you have there may have a few ideas you can try out since they are running into the same or similar problems.

This problem has drive me nut for many days when I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7, on my new Gateway laptop, a simple online search, the problem gone but on other older laptop which is Compaq Presario V2000 the yellow exclamation mark still there regardless what ever drivers D/L from HP website.
I know for sure this Mass Storage Controller has some thing to do with Multimedia card reader since nothing happened when a memory card is inserted, so I just search a driver for a fairly newer laptop from the same HP site and it works great, checking Control Panel - Devices Manager no more yellow mark.
Hope this can help because I know it very frustrating.

    Cheer!
