Asus Z170-A, Win 7 and USB 3 drivers

so i understand win 7 doesnt support USB 3.0 natively and requires drivers. i've heard people that ran into problems where the windows installer would go no further than the welcome screen because it cannot recognize the USB ports. however the asus z170-a board comes with 2x USB 2.0 ports...

so can i plug my mouse and keyboard into the USB 2.0 ports to install the OS and install the USB 3.0 drivers AFTER i install windows?

    thanks!

Hi, you will only have issues if you try to install Win7 off a USB drive.
Win7 install drivers are Ehci and the later M/B's require Xhci drivers.
You can inject Xhci drivers into your install USB or just install from Optical drive.

    Yes.

You`ll have no issues with a dvd.

Later on in the future, if you want you can create a usb installer with Asus EZ Installer Software, it`s very simple :)

I recently (two weeks ago) built a new system with an ASUS Z170 ROG Maximus III Hero motherboard. I previously had a triple boot system with Win 10/Win 7/Win 10 Preview each on a separate drive. I installed the drives in the new system and both of the Win 10's booted up without any problems (other than updating to the new hardware). When I tried to boot the Win 7 I got a BIOS message that it was incompatible. I didn't go any further with Win 7 as I really didn't need it and had only kept it as I have a client that still has Win 7 (but will be updating to new Win 10 PC shortly).

I had looked at other motherboards before buying the ASUS. I had originally purchased an ASRock Z170 motherboard. The ASRock came with a Win 7 "install" CD that would allow it to be used on Win 7. The ASRock motherboard was defective and returned and replaced with the ASUS.

thank you for the detailed post

so even installing win 7 using a USB 2.0 board and mouse on the USB 2.0 ports wont work?

i was under the impression it was strictly regarding USB 3.0 ports.....

but when i was lucky enough to get into win 7 (without the board crashing on me), the mouse and keyboard worked just fine. the USB 2.0 ports wouldnt recognize my external HDD tho =\
