HP Pavillion, Intel i3 Graphics Driver error 80070103
I'm helping a friend with their PC. It is an HP Pavilion p7-1110. My friend installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 onto a new hard drive, and is using that. I've gotten through all of the Windows Update mess except for the Graphics Driver (the one I actually care about, of course). Without it I'm stuck with no Aero support and boxy square screen resolutions.
Windows Update reports the error code 80070103. According to the internet, this error means that the driver is either already installed or I'm trying to install an older version of the driver than what already is installed. However I do not have any Graphics Drivers installed (I think). I've attempted to download the driver and install it manually from the both HP Support site and the Intel Download site. Both drivers have resulted in the same problem.
After installing the driver, it asks for a restart. So I let it. The boot process makes it all the way past the good ol' Windows 7 logo, but at that point, my video cuts out completely. I have to boot into safe mode and uninstall the driver to fix the problem.
My best guess is that there's some sort of issue with using the HP hardware on non-HP software, but I have no idea if there's any way to fix this properly without getting a hold of the the original hard drive and using the recovery or somethin' to turn it into an HP version of Windows 7. Another possibility is that I can get video if I plug into the DVI port instead of the VGA, but setting that up would be difficult and I'd rather avoid that if I can get away with it.
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
