How To Install Driver For A Different Device?

So I have a Canon scanner that never had a driver for Windows 7.

I read in a forum that someone got it to work with a different Canon scanner driver.

So I have that other driver, but don't know how to install it.

The device is a CanoScan N650u and the driver is a WIA driver for a CanoScan LiDE 25 (CNQW25.INF is the setup file)

I tried doing through the usual route of updating the driver in device manager but since it's the wrong one, of course it tells me it cannot find the driver.

And the setup doesn't support right click install on the inf.

So how can I install this driver?

    Thanks for the help!

    have you tried this method?

if that does not fix it, post your scanner's Hardware Device ID. It will be listed in start > run > msinfo32 > components > problem devices

    Thank you for your help!

Yes, I have tried that. It does not work. On the last step it complains that the driver cannot be found (probably since it's the driver for a different scanner).

Here is the entry, with the ID for the device from System Information.

CanoScan USB\VID_04A9&PID_2206\5&3213A848&0&1 The drivers for this device are not installed.

And here is an entry that appears in the INF for the driver for the "other" scanner:
    [Models.NTamd64]
    %USBENUM\CNQW25.DeviceDesc%=CSInstall,USB\VID_04A9&PID_2220

What happens if you just replace the other (underlined) ID in the INF with the ID for the device from above? Does it cause sparks and flames? :)

Or is there some other method of accomplishing this?

Your idea to replace 2220 with 2206 will tell the install program that your scanner is valid for that driver and it should then install the driver. It may or may not work, but I would not foresee it causing a problem you could not fix by just uninstalling the driver. And if it does not work, I suggest you try Vuescan, which was recommended in the below thread.
