exe opens in notepad instead of installing

    Just as the title says.
    I have tried:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...a-or-windows-7

and downloaded the default.exe, right click, merge

    neither one worked.

I'm trying to install the drivers for my avid interface:
    http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/d...k-solo-drivers

    and update my graphics software:
    Download blender.org

Both are opening up in notepad, I've tried installing in safe mode and that had other issues of installer can't run in safe mode. So I tried:

    http://www.thewindowsclub.com/make-w...k-in-safe-mode

    That didn't work either.

    Thx,
    Dave

Hello Dave, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

If you like, see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the .exe option in the tutorial below may help.

The installer for Avid starts to run, goes through some Microsoft Visual C++ dialogue box (twice) then opens in notepad.
I'm going to Mongolian bbq for lunch back in an hour or so.

Just verifying since you didn't mention using that specific download. It's more thorough than the others.

It sounds like the .exe is running as it should, but something else is going on causing notepad to open. So the above won't matter anyways.

Does notepad have any logs or messages in it?

Have you already tried "Run as administrator" on the .exe to see if that may help any?

You might also contact Avid support to see what they may say.

If you know when this may have started happening, you could see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before it started may fix this.
