Have no nvm driver for windows 7  

Thank you very much for your advice and information; very helpful. The computer that I purchased in December 2017 is an Acer Aspire S13 (S5-371T) Ultrabook which was pre-installed with Windows 10 Home. The configuration is an Intel i7, 7th generation, 8GB RAM and has 2 USB3 ports and 1xUSBC port. I 'played' with Windows 10 Home and concluded that Windows 10 is a social media and entertainment OS. I am not interested in either. It is not possible to customise the OS and get rid/uninstall the bloatware. It drove me nuts, hence the reason I was struggling to install Windows 7 Ultimate and since have learnt a lot.

A SevenForums guru sent me a link to "Windows 7 Updater". This small program integrates all Microsoft's updated drivers automatically and I was able to burn it to a DVD DL. The installation went like a dream and I am now able to install the programs that I currently use. All is well but for a driver..

The computer has a touch screen and touchpad and they are not working. The information that I see from Device Manager is as follows: On the General tab, Location - "Intel(R) Serial IO 12C Host Controller 9D61. The Driver for this device are not installed (Code 28)." The Details tab Hardware ID: ACPI\ELAN0501 *ELAN0501. I installed the ELAN touchpad driver, but that has not solved the problem.

However, with SevenForum's assistance, I am hoping that someone will steer me into the correct direction.

Where did you get the driver installer file that you installed? Was there a version number for the driver? Was it supposed to support Win7 x64?

Does Device Manager still show it as no driver installed? Or is it installed but the devices just aren't working?

DriverIdentifer web site shows that Hardware ID as Synaptics(R) I2C Miniport drivers / Acer Aspire ES1-431

and the driver file is named "I2C HID Device Driver for Acer - Aspire ES1-431".

And there is a link to the page of downloads, with the most recent one as version 19.4.18.32 dated 1/17/2018, purportedly for Win7 x64 which is your situation, although it does also show this driver file as being for a Lenovo machine despite the title indicating that it is for Acer Aspire. Might be worth a try, if your previous driver install attempt was unsuccessful.

DriverIdentifier is dependable, but it costs $20/year. If this missing driver issue is important (as it surely is, if the touchpad and touchscreen aren't working) then I would consider investing $20.

Device Manager shows "no driver installed". Thank you for the link to DriverIdentifier, I shall try it and let you know how I go.

Wow! With the help from the internet the driver problem has been resolved. I went into the BIOS > Main, Touchpad and changed it from Advanced to Basic and then saved and closed. When booting into Windows I opened Device Manager and the driver was installed automatically, so now I have the touchscreen and the touchpad working. What a frustrating learning curve!

Did you run that installer from the DriverIdentifier site, and was THAT the proper driver for your touchpad/touchscreen?

Or was it simply that BIOS settings change (from Advanced to Basic, whatever that implies) which then for some reason finally tripped Windows Device Manager to finally correctly recognize the hardware and automatically install the correct driver?

Whichever, can you look at Device Manager Hardware ID again and see if it is still the same value as it was before? I would guess that the Hardware ID might now be different in order for Windows to finally go to its Windows Update Catalog for a search on that value and this time actually find a match, and then download and install the correct driver for the new Hardware ID. Just thinking out loud to try and explain why it works now.

No, I did not use DriverIdentifier. It was simply the BIOS setting from the option of 'Advanced' to 'Basic'. It did not get the file from Windows Update but was on the system when installing Windows and the BIOS just activated it. The Hardware ID is the same as mentioned earlier and shows in Device Manager as a PS2 mouse (Basic). Of course I do not have PS2 on the system, only USB3 and the touchpad and touchscreen. The Windows 7 updater (to January 2018) came off the internet entitled "Windows 7 Image Updater". The program does all the slipstreaming for you with all drivers from Microsoft and works very well. As a matter of interest, the person who wrote the program is Atak_Snajpera, a Polish person. His profile is interesting.

Interesting. Hard to comprehend how the Hardware ID could be the same as it was and yet Windows now can figure out the driver to use/activate. If you were to look up that Hardware ID as I did, you get the Synaptics I2C HID Device for ACER-Aspire, not a PS/2 mouse. Maybe PS/2 mouse is the absolute most basic generic way all mice work (similar to absolute basic generic VGA mode from all graphics cards, e.g. for use by the BIOS, no matter what fabulous graphics card you have), no matter what real manufacturer it is and no matter whether it's a laptop touchpad or a real mouse.

So maybe setting it to "basic" mode reverts it to appear and function simply as if it were a vanilla generic mouse to Windows, which means you've perhaps lost some special touchpad-specific functionality that probably would have been available if "advanced" is set and you actually do have the correct driver installed (i.e. perhaps that Synaptics driver for that Hardware ID from DriverIdentifier). For example, special mice typically have additional tabs on the Properties dialog, to control and set the unique hardware capability of that mouse. I would imagine yours doesn't have anything but the most basic options available.

Anyway, now that you have "gotten it to work", it would be interesting to at least give the DriverIdentifier installer specifically for the Synaptics touchpad (which is what it is) with the BIOS put back to "advanced". I know, it's your $20 so it's up to you, and it may not be worth it to expend any more time (or money) on the issue. I used to have a subscription but it expired a year ago and I haven't had a need to renew it, or I would have downloaded it myself and let you have it.

I know that it sounds strange that the BIOS was the answer to the driver problem, but I can only assume that Windows 10 needed that function as well as UEFI to work properly. To install Windows 7, I had to turn off Secure Boot in the BIOS and change UEFI to Legacy, so maybe that is all intertwined. Previously I have never needed assistance for a driver and managed to work it out, but this one really stumped me, hence the reason I have never used DriverIdentifier or any other program to find a driver. I am still enormously grateful to a member who steered me in the right direction to finally 'remove' Windows 10 from the ultrabook and downgrade to Windows 7.

All went well except for one small problem; the touchpad... Despite concentrating on the driver(s), nothing seemed to solve the problem. I then went into the BIOS >Main >Touchpad and changed the option from Advanced to Basic, then F10 to save.

Wonderful! The touchpad is now operational.

STEP 2 – Installing Windows 7
1) Restart and press repeatedly F2 to launch boot menu
2) Under BOOT selet “Legacy” boot mode
3) F10 to save and exit
4) Press F2 again repeatedly to launch boot menu
5) Under BOOT/ Boot Devices Order select flash drive as the first boot device
6) F10 to save and exit
Follow the installation instructions, but you can not continue because the disk is in GPT format.
7) During installation, press simultaneously “Shift”+”Fn”+”F10” to run the Command Prompt
8) Type the following commands followed by “Enter”
Diskpart
List disk
Select disk # (# is number of your disk)
Clean (This will erase the entire disk)
Convert MBR
Exit
9) Repeat the installation following the instructions as create partition for system files
10) During the first restart, press F2 repeatedly to launch boot menu
11) Under BOOT/ Boot Devices Order select hard drive as the first boot device
12) F10 to save and exit
13) Set up Windows and you're done
