Well, I think I have it figured out. I think the network card is dead. I did try to get to it, but there is a stripped screw that just will not budge, so I guess I am simply not going to get online with my Acer. I have a small Toshiba laptop, but the sound is almost nonexistent. Works fine with headphones though, and I can get online.

I would like to say thanks to all of you who commented. With your help I was able to figure this out. Without it, I would have never done so.

    Hi bluejudy,
    Sir,
I do not agree that your card is dead. I myself faced this problem. I have a lot of things to share/advise/try.
Also you missed some very good points cited by Sir@torchwood.
    1.You should try Hard Reset.
2.Your wireless card is not totally dead as it is detecting the wireless connections. A proper driver should do the thing.
3.There is a BIOS driver update for your pc to improve WLAN.
4.may be you don't have atheros wireless card at all, you may keep on installing it but it is not there & so it will never show.
Actually you have ''Intel Centrino(R) Wireless-N 100'' wireless adapter. That is not for your Home Router!
I have never seen two wireless adapters on the same pc. They will be conflicting, isn't it ?
5.Even if your card is dead, you can use an external USB wireless adapter to connect that pc to internet.
6.You also have Ethernet option to get online.
7.You should test the things out of the OS! There may be a software problem. For that our senior sir @SIW2 has a win 10 recovery media that is well equipped with drivers to connect to internet.
That way even Nord VPN & AV will not come into play if it/they are the problem.
    8. It is possible that just taking card out, blowing the dust & re seating the card does it all well.
    9. If there are connecting problem(s), You can check that desktop & card on/in all different environment.
For eg. switch off all the Routers & Wireless devices, turn on the 'data usage' & 'hotspot' on your Mobile & try to connect to that.

Now it is left to you!

    Thanks & Regards. ...

Wow! Thank you so much. I shall try all of this. I am so glad you gave me these tips. I shall go back and reread the advice from Torchwood. I think perhaps I just did not understand it.

I am also going to read the tutorials and the Super Windows Guide and will maybe figure out how to phrase questions. I think part of all this is knowing the questions I should be asking, and sometimes I do not. I appreciate the guidance and advice everyone here provides. Sometimes I wonder why people will spend so much of their unpaid time helping others. I hope that someone pays something forward to all of you for doing what you do.

    Regards,

    Hi bluejudy,
    Greets,
    Ma'am,
It's a tradition established by seniors & I hope it will continue forever!

I am ready to support interactively if you have any doubts/confusions/problems but it may take times in between. I would suggest to edit 'System Specs' for that.

Please mention installed BIOS version as well. If you run Speecy, in the 'Motherboard' section, BIOS version, date, etc. will be shown there.

    Let me know.

    Thanks & Regards. ...
