Operation requires an interactive window station

    Dear All Forum Members,

I am trying to clean up an older Win7 Pro machine. Some functions simply failed e.g. USB mouse and VGA adapter.

In attempting to upgrade some drivers (USB host controller) the system refused to co-operate and spat out the message 'Operation requires an interactive window station'.

I have spent quite some considerable time on the 'net investigating the possible causes, and have performed the following actions:

    1. Run a complete virus scan on the m/c
    2. Disabled system protection and the backup function on the O/S drive, then attempted to install the drivers
    3. Attempted to change the appropriate permissions on ..\Windows\system32\drivers and ..\Windows\system32\Driverstore directories
    4. Restored the machine to a much earlier state
    5. Run an sfc scan on the system drive while 'online' (within Win 7) and 'offline' (using the Win 7 installation disc).
    6. Attempted installing the drivers from the original disc supplied with the motherboard.

Sadly, none of these things worked.

Can anyone give me a few new ideas that might save me from doing a complete reformat and Win 7 installation on this machine?

    Yours in hope ?.........

    Hi

one of the stranger MS quirks.

please download the tool from here, select Reset Permissions

Download Windows Repair (All In One)

read the Read Me first, nothing to stop you adding a few of the other options

It also provides a log, so if it fails there are further things we can look at.

    Hi Torchwood,

    Thank for the guidance.

I downloaded an the AIO application you suggested. It seemed to cause more problems with the machine.
I could not execute a system recovery.

I have decided to retire this machine.

    Thanks again for the assistance.
