    Newbie question about printer sharing

I have an HP Laserjet 2300 Series PCL6 printer connected directly to a Windows XP machine. On the same network, I have a new machine running Windows 7. I want to share the printer over the network.

Question: Am I wasting my time trying to get this to work?

FYI, Windows 7 sees the shared printer but when it attempts to connect in the "Add a Printer" dialog, it gives me a "No driver found" alert. I downloaded the (hopefully) appropriate Windows 7 printer driver (*) from the HP site and installed it on my Windows 7 machine, but when I try to connect, I still get "No driver found."

Is it possible to physically connect the printer to the windows 7 machine for the purpose of set-up? If so first connect and set-up the printer as a local printer then re-install the printer as a network printer when it should now find the existing local driver.

another way if the connection is not possible is to manually install the driver locally and then create a new tcp/ip port with the printer address as the location string \\computername\printername

Hi Perkin, welcome to the Seven Forums.

You could try this if everything else fails:

    • Uninstall all installed Laserjet drivers
    • Run Add a printer dialog
    • Choose Add a local printer
    • When the list of Windows printer drivers appear, choose your printer
    • Follow the instructions given
    • Run Add a printer once more
    • This time choose Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer
    • Follow the instructions given

    It might work.

Setting Up A Shared Printer for XP and Vista - Vista Forums

Here is a tutorial I wrote a while back.... I believe it still works the same way in 7... My printer is connected the same way as listed here, and I am using 7 Home Premium.

    Good Luck,
