    Concerning the VM Method

Your method is GREAT for the Nikon scanner --not an issue but was just pointing out another alternative where apart from scanning the user might actually want to use the SCANNER SOFTWARE itself as well before starting their photo application such as Photoshop.

Some of the older scanner software also won't run on W7 either -- so I wasn't justt considering the driver.
Jimbo, while I understand where you’re coming from be aware that the procedures I posted are actually for the "Nikon Scan" software (ver 4.0.3). If you use Vuescan, the scanner will work as Vuescan has it's own driver for the scanner for all version of Win 7 & Vista.

The "Nikon" software won't work without its driver under Win 7 or Vista x64... that's the problem.

BTW have you seen any of the Nikon film scanners? They're strictly for scanning film/slides That's it. Here’s the Super Coolscan 5000ED. I have the older Super Coolscan 4000ED.

Anyways these scanners run/ran about $1000 dollars. And what’s effed up is that Nikon refuses to support Windows 7 or Vista x64!!! Thus the hacked driver.

Anyways this post was used to help write my procedures here.

    I appreciate the input though.

    Peace
New to this post (first post in fact) and admittedly only part way through it, but one of the things that led me here was the VM Method doesn't support Firewire only USB and of course the Coolscan 4000 is a Firewire device. There are also issues in the fact that the 3rd party software doesn't support the auto slide feeders, only the Nikon Coolscan software does, so really if you want all the old bells and whistles on the 4000 there is no other choice. Very interesting and informative stuff too sygnus21, can't wait to try the fix.

    mgriffith,

eventually I bought Vuescan, years ago it was not on par with NikonScan, now it is much better, easier to use and gives better results.
Vuescan supports all scanners, including your Coolscan 4000, I just don't know if it works with firewire, strange though: my 5000ED is USB only ! There is a trial version so you can check ...

Vuesan supports both the firewire and USB flavors of the Nikon Coolscans.

Anyway the sole purpose of this thread/tutorial is specifically dedicated getting the Nikon Software to work with the scanner under Windows 7 x64, not whether the program is better on not.

BTW I have, and used, Vuscan and have my opinions on it but won't discuss it here as, again, the purpose here is to get the Nikon Scan software working under Windows 7 x64.

Also the trial period is only 30 days, after that you can either pay 80 bucks for the Pro Edition which gives you more options (in addition to lifetime updates), or pay 40 bucks for the Standard edition and updates for a year.

VueScan Scanner Software for Windows 7, Mac OS X Lion, Linux, iPhone, iPad, iPod

Anyway I prefer to stick to the purpose of this tutorial here.

    Thanks

Yeah the site is currenly down as I debate it's future, as well as my future here.

    Anyway here's a copy of the file - scanners.zip

I'll also attach it to the first page.

    Thanks.

I also recommend you try VueScan from VueScan Scanner Software for Windows 7, Mac OS X Lion, Linux, iPhone, iPad, iPod. This is a great app, with Photoshop import functionality. I'm pretty sure you don't need extra drivers to get it all working. VueScan has a x64 version so it's totally current.

Hi just got a Nikon V ED scanner and tried the above fix but doesn't work. Just says "windows cannot find any driver software for your device". I tried both dlls as wasn't sure if my scanner is USB as it has USB at one end and printer type socket on the other. Thanks for any advice
