Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

Maybe not run at the same time, but they can both be installed at the same time. I always had both installed but much preferred Nikon Scan as I found it easier to use, plus I felt the noise reduction algorithm (ICE) was much better than VS iteration.

Anyway I always suggest you uninstall VS first, than if you still want to use it, you can always reinstall it. But... you got the scanner working so happy scanning.

Appreciate the offer. As a photographer I'd love to come down under and do some shooting but that won't be anytime soon

Sygnus21, Wonderful instructions. Got my Coolscan IV ED Firmware on the old XP updated. Then re connected on the new PC, nested those two drivers as you suggested and bingo! My Win7x64 was smokin' ICE3 up to ICE4 as well by the looks. Lovely trick to get the Vista software version of Nikon Scan to work.

Sygnus21 what is the reason for the NKScn linked library file needing to be in with the driver file? Does this senario apply in most cases with device drivers?
I read somewhere thar the Silverfast software is a good alternative and I have been using it on the plustek scanner Win7x64 environment. I swapped the Plustek for the Nikon basically for the IR dust removal function on the Nikon LS-40ED. I take it that the Nikon software is mandatory for the hardware based IR dust reduction meaning other scanner management software will be less effective, is this correct?
My apology if these q's are too off topic.

These two files need to talk to each other so they need to be in same directory unless one of the files had a pointer to some other location, of which I'm fairly sure they don't.

It depends on the coding and file types but that's getting beyond my scope. I'm not a programmer, I just compiled the information from on-line sources with my experience and put together the instructions here.

Was interested in Silverfast,but never used it since at that time I thought it was a bit too expensive. This was around 2002 when I first got my scanner. Have no need for it now since I'm no longer using my scanner since going digital.

I would say yes although Vuescan offers a slightly different but similar option. Incidentally this is why I much preferred Nikon's scan software over Vuescan because I liked Nikon's ICE much better than Vuescan's iteration.

I desperately need to get in touch with Sygnus21. I am running windows 7 on a Sandy Bridge Extreme and have a Nikon Coolscan that is close to being installed. The nikon is installing as an unknown device and I think I am missing the info in my inf file. Please help.

Really not sure what you're missing as the steps are clearly stated for Windows 7 as well as some precautions needed to insure the scanner works. That said... what Coolscan is this you're trying to install???

Also, the processor doesn't matter, so that's not your issue.

Let me know. You also need to let me know what steps you're unsure of.

I have been through the steps many times and thank you for reply.

I am trying to install Nikonscan for a coolscan V ED....with a usb interace. But I have just installed NikonScan on XP Pro and apparently there's a hatdware problem with the scanner which I bought used.

By the way, I grew up in NewportNews.
