Hopefully one last question for Sygnus21

After reading through your entire thread up to message #261, I can appreciate your effort to retire from such a troublesome topic. In that message you made a comment that stopped me cold. I have been struggling with my Super Cool Scan 4000 ED like so many others. However, I was successful in gaining full control in my Win 7 Ultimate 64 using the instructions from Steel Chn. I had only used the scanner a few times (THROUGH PS cs 5) when a relatively new Drobo HD failed and caused much grief.

In the process of trying to regain control of the Drobo, I had tried to restore my system to an earlier date and it FAILED. Supposedly the registry was left where I started, but I no longer could use my scanner and had to reinstall a few other major programs. (It was obvious my registry had become corrupted to some extent.) Similarly, I tried to redo the Nikon software install with the same .inf file from Steel Chn. Although the scanner showed up in the device manager, I could not use Nikon Scan. To make a long story shorter, the Scan program would load with the error that it couldn't access the source, which I later "learned" was the lack of the Twain drivers. Adobe had stopped including the twain drivers in cs5, but I DLd them and put them in the proper folder.

Thus I went on a search for clues as to how to make the Twain drivers accessible to Nikon Scan or PS 5. Then in message #261, you said,
<quote> When you say you can't get it to accept a twain source what do you mean? Are you trying to use another program to import an image directly from the scanner? If so, I'm not so sure this can be done under Windows 7 as there are no WIA drivers for the scanner under 7 or Vista 64-bit, therefor twain won't work with the scanner.>

Perhaps that's why I'm having so much trouble, BUT, how in the world did I get it to work beautifully through PS cs5 before? When I went to "Import", I selected the Twain driver for Nikon Scanner, and it loaded right up. If only I could reconstruct what I had.

Now I understand your not wanting to struggle with this type of thing, but could you refer me to some place that may have the time and expertise? If it weren't for the value of using ICE with Nikon Scan, I might be tempted to use VueScan, but I found the option to be like magic.

In any case, I too want to thank you for all your past support on this topic.

    What comment??? Please link.

I'm sorry but you have me completely lost here. You mention registry, which my instructions doesn't require any registry tweaks, hacks, or otherwise so I'm confused as to why you mention registry. You also keep mentioning Steel Chn's inf file, which shouldn't need to be used since you have a Nikon Coolscan 4000 and my inf file should work for it.

And yes... there is NO twain support, but that's from Nikon, NOT adobe.

Thus I went on a search for clues as to how to make the Twain drivers accessible to Nikon Scan or PS 5. Then in message #261, you said,

Again, there is NO twain support so don't look for it. Sorry.

    It's not going to

Please clarify your post as it is confusing to me. Sorry.

Outside of that, please make sure you're taking notice of notes and warnings in my instructions as I proofed them using Windows 7 and my Nikon Coolscan 4000. In short I know these instructions work with Windows 7 and that scanner.

After spending over an hour making a response, I was unable to preview or submit and lost the whole thing, so I'm not real happy.

I do appreciate your response, but feel bad that I've not made myself clear. What I was doing was trying to give a brief description of what happened before coming to this site for help. I think the most important paragraph was my 2nd, where I said,

However, I was successful in gaining full control in my Win 7 Ultimate 64 using the instructions from Steel Chn.
I was so proud of getting this scanner to work for me. Since I seem to have a credibility problem here, I'll elaborate just a bit. When I 1st got the Nikon Scan program to work stand alone (using Steel Chn's method), I was troubled at not being able to use it through Photo Shop cs5. After help from another site, (can't remember where) and much reading, I learned that Adobe had stopped providing the Twain drivers with the program. So I DL'd them from Adobe and put them in the appropriate folder and all was great. I could see both the Nikon and Epson scanners under Twain under "Import" in PS. Because Twain only comes as 32 bit, I was using PS in 32 bit mode also. I know you say it shouldn't work, but I was able to scan maybe 50 or more slides directly into PS.

Then I proceeded to explain how another "unrelated" issue caused me to lose this function ability. After updating the firmware to my Drobo Hard Drive system, I lost all contact with the Drobo. In an effort to recover, I tried to restore my system to a previous date - that failed - and I was supposed to have been restored to a state before I tried to restore. What was worse, several things had stopped working like my mailer and my browser, including the scanner.

You mention registry, which my instructions doesn't require any registry tweaks, hacks, or otherwise so I'm confused as to why you mention registry.
Note - still no knowledge of sevenforums or sygnus21. I'm still trying to relate the sequence of events here. But with the loss of programs working, it was evident to me that something got messed up in the registry. (this is the only time registry was mentioned and shouldn't alarm you as it has nothing to do with your or your fix.)

After reinstalling my non working programs including Nikon Scan 4.03, I was never able to regain control of Nikon Scan. At 1st Nikon Scan would lock up the computer, but after several re-installs (and even removing all traces of Nikon from the registry.) I got Nikon Scan to load with the error, "Could not open Nikon Scan 4.0 data source." After much reading, concluded that it couldn't see the twain drivers. Also the scanner was properly in the device manager, but no twain drivers for either scanner in PS.

Because of the twain drivers not being a real part of your remedy, I was asking if you could refer me to a better place to approach this issue. Actually, that was the whole reason for finding sevenforums and posting here.

I just had a thought while typing this -- maybe if I reinstall the Epson printer/scanner, I could regain that twain function in PS. I'll have to save that for another night as I'm way past bed time because of having to redo this post.

Thanks again for all your efforts.

First off... I'm not sure where you get that you have a "credibility problem here" from

but it certainly doesn't come from me. My response to you was for you to clarify your post since it mentions things that has nothing todo with my fix here.

As for getting twain to work, as I’ve mentioned in post 270 and 263, I’ve never got it to work. I’m also not in a position to offer any help in this area since I’m no longer using the scanner, or Windows 7. Sorry.

And the procedures you used from Steel Chn are different from those posted here. Also note that the instructions posted on page 1 of this thread are from me (sygnus21).

    Thanks.

Problems (and solution) after upgrading to Windows 10

I had my Nikon LS-40 scanner working perfectly with the Nikon Scan software and device driver, using 64-bit Windows 8.1 and the instructions provided by synus21 in message #1. Then I did the Windows 10 update a few days ago and the scanner stopped working, reporting the error message “Nikon Scan was unable to find any active devices.” when launched.

I tried a bunch of things to get it working again with no success. But what DID finally work was to completely uninstall the Nikon Scan software and go to the Device Manager and uninstall the device driver for the scanner. Then reboot and start the process from scratch of installing the Nikon Scan software and scanners.inf, exactly as described in this thread message #1 by sygnus21 and using the option to install unsigned device drivers as described in message #409 by JustLucky.

The scanner is now working great with 64-bit Windows 10 and the Nikon provided software. Not using VueScan software at all. So if any of you are thinking about or have already upgraded to Windows 10, you may encounter problems with your scanner but it is possible to solve them.

Thanks for the Win 10 info

    Hello jvahsholtz,

Thanks for the info and I'm glad my instructions helped. Though I no longer use the scanner since going digital, I'm sure others, perhaps myself someday, may find your info useful. And I'm most appreciative to see this thread still helping people, even as new OS' arrive. In that I'm proud of this thread and all that has helped to keep it and the Nikon scanners alive.

    Thanks and happy scanning :)

    Peace

    Coolscan 9000ED on 7

Thanks a lot sygnus21. After following your instructions, my coolscan9000 is working perfectly on my windows 7 pro 64 bit box. I had it set up on a box with XP, but that expired last week, so I went looking on the net and found you. Didn't think it was possible. One downside though, after installing the Nikon Scan 4.0.3 Vista (from the original cd that came with the scanner) and doing a restart, the computer would't fire up. My heart sank. It seemed to be starting up in a sort of sleep mode, with nothing on the screen. The heat indicator light thing on the corsair cpu water cooler body comes on, but that's as far as it gets. After turning on and off quite a few times, same thing. Tried pressing lots of keys, and ctrl alt delete etc. and eventually it fired up. I then followed through with the rest of your instructions, and bingo, scanner working. Still not firing up properly. It seems to be that after turning on and waiting 5 - 10 mins, it eventually fires up. Might not turn it off again, just leave it running 24/7 for a while.
Do you have any thoughts on what may be happening? Thanks again.

    You're welcomed :)

As for your start issues, you might check that the system is not full of dust. Perhaps a can of compressed air might do the trick. You might also check to see that your CPU has the proper thermo paste applied, and that the CPU is properly seated to the motherboard.

That said, if your start issues continue, I'd advise you start a new thread in the Hardware & Devices section of this forum as your issue has nothing to do with the thread here. Someone over there should be able to help you sort things out.

Bottom lines is there is nothing in my instructions that would/should cause the PC start issues you're having.

However, and just to be sure, you could leave the scanner disconnected and see if you have the same issues. If not, try with the scanner connected - If the issue returns. It's possible the scanner itself has an issue, which could be causing Windows problems.

It that's the case the scanner is faulty and would need to be repaired. Good luck with that though as Nikon is said to no longer service these scanners. No, I've no idea where you'd go to get the scanner fixed.

At any rate the above is highly unlikely the cause of your start problems.

    Good luck.

Thanks for your quick reply sygnus21.

Since posting the thread, I have done a system restore to just before installing Nikon Scan, and my computer is back to working fine again. Starts up no worries, so I am thinking that this means it is not a hardware problem. My computer is only a few years old, and has a see through side panel, and everything is very clean in there. I generally dedust my computer and filters regularly.

Can't help but think it is software related, because the problem began immediately after loading the software, and before connecting the scanner. The software installation required a restart, and I did make the mistake of hitting the 'restart now' button in the software, rather than exiting and shutting down, and starting normally. Don't laugh at me, but do you think this may cause problems because the software is written for Vista.( You're laughing at me aren't you ?)

Before doing the restore, I turned off and started again a number of times, and each time it started as though in sleep mode, then after about 15 secs, would fire up. My mouse and keyboard are set to bring it out of sleep mode, but didn't have any effect during this 15 secs. My settings were still on 'never' for sleep and hibernation.

Anyhow, I am still very happy knowing that I can get the scanner to work on this box thanks to you.
If the worst thing that happens is that I wait 15 secs for bootup, that's not so bad.
I will reload the software again, and not press Nikon's restart button just for fun.

    Many Thanks for your time,
    Bill :)
