Thanks for your quick reply sygnus21.

Since posting the thread, I have done a system restore to just before installing Nikon Scan, and my computer is back to working fine again. Starts up no worries, so I am thinking that this means it is not a hardware problem. My computer is only a few years old, and has a see through side panel, and everything is very clean in there. I generally dedust my computer and filters regularly.

Can't help but think it is software related, because the problem began immediately after loading the software, and before connecting the scanner. The software installation required a restart, and I did make the mistake of hitting the 'restart now' button in the software, rather than exiting and shutting down, and starting normally. Don't laugh at me, but do you think this may cause problems because the software is written for Vista.( You're laughing at me aren't you ?)

Before doing the restore, I turned off and started again a number of times, and each time it started as though in sleep mode, then after about 15 secs, would fire up. My mouse and keyboard are set to bring it out of sleep mode, but didn't have any effect during this 15 secs. My settings were still on 'never' for sleep and hibernation.

Anyhow, I am still very happy knowing that I can get the scanner to work on this box thanks to you.
If the worst thing that happens is that I wait 15 secs for bootup, that's not so bad.
I will reload the software again, and not press Nikon's restart button just for fun.

    Many Thanks for your time,
    Bill :)

    Hi BlinkyBill2,

Sorry about your issue but I have to point out that through the length of this thread, all the e-mails I've gotten through my website, plus my own experience.... there is absolutely no issue with my fix and Windows 7 that would cause the issue you've experienced.

I wrote these procedures as I used them on my Windows 7 machine at the time with my Nikon Coolscan 4000ED. I've also had to walk many people through the procedures and no one has ever reported the type issue you've experienced.

In fact, if you read the last few pages of this thread, you'd even see some have used my fix to get the scanners to work under Windows 8, and still no crashing issues.

While I'm aware that anything can happen in computers, based on my experience, and that of others, I'm quite confident your issue has nothing to do with my fix or the drivers and file provided.

At any rate I'm no longer using Windows 7 or the scanner so I can't troubleshoot the issue. All I can say is that if you're having start/restart issues, post it in the forum I linked to. You can even link back to this post, and I'll chime in if need be.

And you shouldn't have to "wait 15 secs for bootup". That would indicate there is an issue that needs looking into.

    Thanks, and good luck.

    switch to win-10

I have succeeded in getting my Coolscan 4000 to work flawlessly (on Win7) using the excellent instructions provided in the thread. Thanks Cygnus!

I am now about to switch my OS to Windows 10.
Does anyone have any idea what will happen after the switch?

    Win 10 and Nikon scanner

See my message #546 for details on my experience upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1, with my Nikon scanner. Bottom line, I had to go through the Nikon software installation process again after the upgrade, but the process for getting the Nikon software installed still works just fine under Windows 10.

Note that Windows 10 (like 8 before it but not 7) by default won't let you install the unsigned Nikon device driver but my message refers to instructions on how to get around that problem (see message #409).

Good luck but know that your scanner WILL work with Windows 10.

I have tried this method for Windows 10, but it is not working as it did for Windows 7. Any ideas on how to install a driver for ED4000 on Windows 10?

    Thanks

I've already detailed the method that I used to install the scanner driver in Windows 10 (see earlier messages). It works the same as it did in Windows 8 and 8.1. If you provided more details about what you tried or what is not working perhaps someone could help you.

Hi jvahsholtz, it might help if you linked to your post suggesting said fix: Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64 (post 546).

That said, since I no longer use the scanner I can not validate the procedures jvahsohltz is talking about. Yes, I'm running Windows 10, I just don't have a use for the scanner at this point in time.

    Peace

Coolscan 5000 ED with windows 10

I have same problem as Whitunc in Feb 2010, but on Windows 10. I assume I downloaded the scanners.inf with the fix as original thread was in 2010.

I down loaded the "scanners.inf" to USB folder option. Tried searching specific folder and C:\ and all subfolders. You mentioned a fix for 5000, does that include 5000ED

Success in installing driver for LS9000 under Win 10 Professional

Under Windows 10 I had to "disable digital signature checking" by holding the shift-key down while restarting. Then I went to Device Manager to update the driver for the LS9000. When I updated the driver, Windows warns that the driver is not digitally signed and gives the option of continuing or aborting. I elected to continue. I rebooted and the LS9000 can be seen by Nikon Scan4. If I did not disable digital signature checking, Windows automatically did not install the driver.

Thank you for the file and the instructions.

    It worked

Thank you so much. I followed your instructions and my Nikon Coolscan 9000 works great on Windows 7 professional. Now if I could just get rid of explorer issues...

    Thanks again

    Many thanks

Many, many thanks for this solution!

Now my scanners 4000 and 8000 work with my Win7 Pro 64bit system.

Only NiconScan Software does crash sometimes when closing the Prefs window.

    But the rest works perfect.
