Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

Firstly I'm surprised but delighted that this thread seems, potentially, to still be live!
I started looking though all 57 pages to see if there was an answer to this, but in the end, I cut to the end.
I cannot find the Firmware upgrade software on the Nikon site, and wondered if I'm looking in the wrong place, or if any members happened to have a copy. I have, I think, the same as you - the Super Coolscan 4000 ED.
I've read that any firmware update has to happen on the XP OS, before then trying to get the scanner to work under Windows 7 Pro64 (again, I think that's the same as yours).
Alternatively, perhaps it's not absolutely necessary to upgrade the firmware before getting it to run on W7?
Here's hoping your 'Peace' post wasn't a sign-off!

Unfortunately it looks like Nikon has removed all firmware updates for all their scanners so I can't help you there as I no longer have a copy myself.

That said, you could still try the procedures without the firmware update. If it does not work you may have no choice but the buy a copy of Vuescan which does support the scanner. It is a paid program though; however they do offer a free trial so my suggestion is to try the free trial if my procedures don't work and go from there.

Sorry, I wish I could be of more help but a lot of things have changed since I first created this thread. That said, I try to provide help where I can, especially with the procedures here, but truth be told I don't even keep up on what these scanners are doing today, especially with regards to Windows 10.

Anyway my suggestion is to try the procedures here as written, even though you may not have the last firmware update and see what happens. If they don't work, and you really need the scanner, give Vuescan a try. And for the record, I hate recommending something you have to pay for (thus my procedures here) when Nikon should still be supporting these scanners, but unfortunately this is where we are now.

I think I may be able to help you. I successfully got NikonScan to work with my 4000ED under Win7/64.
I did this 6 or 7 years ago but I think I can reconstruct the procedure from my notes.

First, let's clear up your reference to "firmware" for this scanner. To the best of my knowledge Nikon never published a firmware revision for this scanner. They did however publish several updates to the NikonScan software. To establish where you are starting from, may I ask you to go to the following folders on your computer and copy a list of all subfolders and files found therein:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Nikon\Driver\Scan1394

C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon\NKScan4

Do you have access to DropBox so that I may send you necessary files?

Uh, yes they did! If you look at the link I provided (to the now removed firmware) you'll see a blank field as opposed to the no "firmware updates available" field. Those blank field once had firmware updates, but now they've been removed. Secondly, as the author of these procedures, I added that in because I too have a Nikon 4000 and in fact DID do the update... thus the note

All the files, sans the firmware update, as well as the instructions are included right here in this thread, including the C:\Program Files directory, Page 1. No need for drop boxes :)

What the OP was concerned with was whether they could use the procedures without having did the update. I advised they give it a try.

BTW I'm of the opinion Nikon removed the firmware because it required an XP machine. XP is now a dead OS, so...

You are quite correct; I beg your pardon. It has been so long since I performed the conversion that I forgot that all the necessary links to software are referenced in your posts. Also I cannot remember if I performed the firmware update before making the conversion to win7.

In one of the links I believe it is stated that updating the firmware is not really necessary if one is running Windows (as opposed to Mac).

Note: from Nikon:

However, we have tested that installation of Nikon Scan
4.0.3 and general operations is possible under the 32-bit version of Windows 7
with the following scanner models listed below.

In any case, if BobStA tells us what files appear in the folders I mentioned, we may be better able to help him.

The title of this thread states "W7 x64". I assume everyone who has installed win7 has both a 32 and 64 bit version installed, but perhaps this may not always be the case and perhaps may lead to problems.

Bob, Note the following;

1. The firmware update is available at the link provided by sygnus21: Super Coolscan LS4000 Firmware Update 1.10 - Windows It will run under win7. It is possible that you don't need this update.
2. In either case you will need to install Nikon Scan 4.0.3 which you can find here: https://www.nikonimgsupport.com/ni/N...646&lang=en_US Ignore the warning about use only on Windows Vista. It will work fine on win7
3. Do observe the warning about uninstalling Nikon Scan 4.0.2 before installing 4.0.3

Than why is it that both a Mac and Windows version was supplied. And I saw no such verbiage concerning the "firmware" update.

Bob didn't have a question of files, his question was finding the firmware update in which was apparently removed from the link provided. He also wanted to know if he should proceed without the update, and I stated he should give it a try. At any rate, it appears the firmware update can now be had from here: SuperCoolscan LS4000 Firmware Update 1.10 – Windows. And the link in the first post (page 1) has now been fixed.

The procedures can be used for the 32-bit version of 7 as well. However the issue was 64-bit seeing a larger number of users were trying to get the scanner working under the 64-bit version of Windows. Coupled with the fact than Nikon only supported the 32-bit version of Vista, but NOT the 64-bit version. Thus, the 64-bit in the Windows 7 title.
