Please ensure you Download this file Nikon Scan 4.0.3 from Nikon's website. Make sure the driver is for Windows Vista 32-bit. Yes, Vista 32-bit.

If the file you downloaded isn't working, redownload it again then give it another try.

If you're still having problems, please post a screenshot of the error. https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...en-forums.html

    Thanks.

Problem with Nikon Coolscan 4000 connection

Thanks very much for your quick reply. It's come to my attention that the computer is not even recognizing the scanner. Not sure how this happened because I had everything working at some point (this computer is very new & I've been working on hardware/software installation for the past few weeks). I need to investigate at a more basic level & will get back to you.

    Thanks,
    Maureen

Me again. I had Nikon Scan 3 installed on my old XP computer. I can install the same on this computer with no apparent problem, but there is, of course, no working driver for Win 7. The system won't let me install Nikon Scan 4, in any of its iterations. I get the message I sent with my first post. I tried as both me and administrator.

I'd had the scanner working because I'd downloaded the trial version of Vuescan and it worked. I'd meant to go back and pay for it, but time got away from me & apparently the trial period expired. I'd like to get your fix working (won't cost $40), but can't find any way around the Nikon Scan 4 problem.

    Thanks...

I'm not understanding why the software isn't installing. I too have a Nikon Coolscan 4000 scanner and the instructions were written as I did the procedure. Again, not understanding why you can't get the software to install.

Also, the fact that you can install the program on XP means nothing. Windows 7 is not XP. Sorry.

Can you tell me what version of Windows 7 you have?

Also, please answer the questions/suggestions I posed in my first post to you. Thanks.

I got it! It's working now.

What I meant to say previously (apparently badly) was that I had installed Nikon Scan 3 on the new Windows 7, 64-bit system, and it *had* installed, but of course would not make the scanner work. I did this back when I was first installing software and before I found out that Nikon was not going to support Windows 7.

Once I uninstalled Nikon Scan 3, I was able to successfully install Scan 4. Nikon's error messages were not very useful -- they stated the problem backwards. That done, I was able to follow your excellent instructions through to a happy ending.

    Thanks!!!

Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

I am having major problems with my Coolscan 4000ED. I have followed all the file instructions on this forum and other sites and end up with the same result. Windows Device Manager recognises my Coolscan and when I open Nikon Scan everything looks great and I thought I had got it working. I can insert a strip of negatives into the scanner and Nikon Scan recognises them but as soon as I try to obtain a preview I get an error stating that the scanner has encountered a hardware error and asks me to switch off and back on again. If I just click ok and continue I then get an error to tell me that the scanner is not powered on and to make sure the power lead is connected. At some stage I also experienced a data transfer error stating that there was a problem between the Firewire and USB, but cannot find any errors in the Device Manager.
I have then de-installed Nikon Scan and installed Vuescan and everything works perfectly so proving that the scanner is working fine.
Any ideas out there, has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Hi dave,

I've not experience your issue in any form. Have you looked at the cable or firewire unit/connection? If you look through this thread, you'll see that no else have reported your issue either. This is not to say you don't have a problem, I’m simply saying no one else has reported it.

    Again check your connections.

As I've said here before, I have the Nikon Coolscan 4000ED with the software working under Windows 7 Ultimate x64 without issue. Mine like yours is also firewire.

Also, what firewire connection do you have? Is it built into the motherboard or do you have a standalone card?

And yes, I do see where you say you have no issues when using Vuescan, so that would sound like a software issue as opposed to hardware, but it still wouldn't hurt to check the connections.

    Let me know.

    Hi Thanks for the reply

I agree from all the other posts that have been successful that it seems to point that way.

I was beginning to think of the cable, unfortunately I don't have a spare as the only other firewire cable I have is a small 4 pin connector to the standard firewire port which is connected to my Canopus ADVC-300 so until I can get a new one tomorrow I won't be able to check that side of things.
I have 2 firewire connections one off the Motherboard and the other on a separate I/O connection that plugs into the motherboard. I have tried both these and got the same results on both.

I will get a new cable tomorrow and post back the results.

    Dave.

    Hi

I have managed to test the scanner with the cable that I use for the Canopus ADVC-300 as there is a 4 pin firewire input port on the I/O panel from the motherboard and guess what, it still doesn't work. Nikon Scan recognises the scanner being there but as soon as I try to preview scan a strip of negatives I get the same error that the scanner is not powered up.
The ADVC-300 works fine on this cable but the Coolscan 4000 doesn't so I don't think buying another cable will not resolve the problem.
The scanner has not been moved in the last 6 months and was working fine under XP 32-bit SP3. Since upgrading to Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit this is the only piece of kit I have not been able to get functioning.

    Dave.
