    hmmm.... yeah it is sounding like a software issue. Unfortunately I don't have an answer right now. Let me think on it.

    Hello forum,

    I was having similar problems getting my ED-5000 to work properly under Win7 64bit, and following the directions posted here got it up and running. But the problem is the software (Nikon Scan 4.0.3) crashes every time I try to save a JPEG. I can save bitmaps or TIFFs or anything else that's way too big, but with JPEG the save status bar gets to three quarters and the program inevitably quits. Anyone else run into this issue? I suspect it's something to do with the software (and I also suspect it's to do with a Windows update I applied a while back), but I've tried everything from changing the software settings to running the problem in various compatibility modes, with no luck.

    I just did the same thing and had no problem. Scanner did preview without issue.

    Question? Have you ever updated the firmware on the scanner? If not please give it a try... Super Coolscan LS4000 1.10 firmware update

    I have never updated the firmware so decided to do so. With Nikon Scan 4 installed it would not do it as it was saying could only do it if Nikon Scan 3 was installed so I uninstalled 4 and installed 3. Whilst I was doing so I updated the drivers and in the Device Manager and managed to get scan previews using Nikon Scan 3. Then after 4 or 5 attempts after various error messages I made a final scan of a negative from the preview. After being successful with that even though it wasn't straightforward I thought I would update the firmware and may be able to get the scanner to do the same after re-installing Nikon Scan 4. Even though the firmware looked as though it had updated the scanner is now sat in limbo and will not do anything now after trying to scan a negative. the SA-21 film strip holder is stuck in the scanner together with the negative and cannot now be seen by the software. I am just about to throw this thing in the bin and see if I can get a secondhand Coolscan 5000 as at least that can be installed in Virtual PC which supports USB. The only other alternative is to send it off to Nikon and see if they can remedy the scanner at a cost of probably £250 ($390) which is not much less than I paid for it in the first place.

    Dave, I'm sorry you're having such a hard time getting the sacnner updated and working. Unfortunately I have no further suggestions at this time

    BTW when you attempted the update did you follow these instructions...




    Before performing the update, ensure that the power cables for both scanner and computer and the interface cable or cables connecting the two devices are securely connected. After starting the updater, do not perform any of the operations below until a message appears stating that the update is complete. Depending on their timing, any of these actions could damage the firmware, making it impossible to download it to the scanner:
    • Turning the scanner or host computer off
    • Disconnecting the interface cable
    • Performing any operation on the host computer, including moving the mouse
    • Connecting or disconnecting other 1394 devices or turning them on or off (note that some 1394 devices turn off automatically if no operations are performed for a specified period; such devices should be disconnected from the computer before the update begins)
    The update takes approximately one minute to complete.
    As you suggested, you might consider sending it to Nikon for checkout. Check this link... Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

    Hi, Yes I followed it to the book but as you say there may be an underlying hardware problem with the scanner so I am going to give Nikon a call this morning.

    Yeah, do that. Also be prepared to hear Nikon tell you they don't support Windows 7

    Meaning??? Don't expect any technical support in the Win 7 area.
