canoscan n670u - no driver
I have been told that Canon do not intend to issue a Windows 7 64 bit driver for the Canoscan N67ou scanner.
Is there any way round this or do I have to buy a new scanner?
Advice gratefully received.

You are in luck...kinda
If you are running x86 (32-bit) or Windows 7 than download the first link and install the driver in Compatibility Mode for Windows Vista (Compatibility Mode): Support - CanoScan N670U - Canon USA Consumer Products
If you are running x64 (64-bit)...I have some bad news
Welcome to seven forums simon andrews: On the canin site thier are Vista drivers for your scanner. You can try and install them in compatibility mode Compatibility Mode Canon site Vista drivers Support - CanoScan N670U - Canon USA Consumer Products Hope this will help. You could try Vuescan from Hamrick though the cost of the software/driver will be $40. I would try the trial version first to see if it fits your needs.
I'm not an advocate of Vuescan, I just provide the link/info as an alternative. Though I've owned the software since 2002 and keep up with the updates, I don't use it, but that's a personal issue.
However, Vuescan works with a ton of scanners and incorporates drivers allowing the software to work with a particular scanner under a 64-bit operating system. Something sorely lacking from Nikon and Canon Why???
And no...I don't think you should pay $40 to get your scanner to work on a 64-bit OS, but in this case it may be cheaper than buying a new scanner... that is if the software works on your scanner
Just my two cents
It is just too difficult. I have been through XP, Vista, and now 7. Canon 670U worked fine with Windows 7 upgrade from Vista, but will not work now that I've rebuilt my desktop with the Win7 64 Bit version. My tech told me EVERYTHING should work as before, but no go. Too late to go back to 32 Bit, so will just get another scanner. I would like to get another Canon Lide, like the Canon Lide200, but need to be CERTAIN that it works with 64Bit. Anyone know?? Canon's website doesn't distinguish 32 and 64Bit
I know this is too late, but when moving to a 64-bit OS it's always better to do the research yourself to find out whether the software or hardware will work under the OS. after all "you" know what you have and "you" will be the one stuck if it doesn't work.
As for replacing your scanner, It would be easy for you to write or call them about the model you're interested in. Personally I would e-mail them so you have it in writting. You could also Google the model you're interested in as well.
And did you see my post about trying Vuescan?
You should be OK with the LiDE200. There is a 64-bit Windows 7 driver available for this (just select Windows 7 (x64) in the dropdown box).
