Got the same issue after downloading an iso from MSDN. Tried different burns and it failed every time.

I downloaded another iso from microsoft and it worked.

Bottom line: check your source

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Hi again Gab... thanks again for taking an interest in my problem.

I was halfway through writing down all my system specs for you when I realized something:

I thought all 4 SATA slots and both IDE connectors were used.
3 sata slots were used for sata drives, and 1 sata slot was used with my optical drive. The optical drive is an IDE drive but I connected it with an IDE-to-SATA adapter.

But as I looked through my computer to find the info you asked for, I realized...
only 1 IDE drive is connected with the IDE cable. There is a second connector
on the IDE cable I am no longer using (the drive that was attached there before got removed due to overheating. It's now an external drive attached via USB).

So... now I have my optical drive as an IDE slave to my other IDE hdd. It's working so far. I am going to wait a few hours and if the drive does not disappear, then the problem is solved.

If the drive does disappear again, I will come back here and write down all the specs you wanted >_<

Update - the drive has been present all day and is still working. So I guess the fix was to stop using it with the IDE-to-sata adapter. :/

well this no cd/dvd drive device driver is a real pain

first of all i had a no hdd drive detected, my motherboard (an ASUS) dosn't supply sata drivers for win7 wtf! so i rigged up an old 15gb ide drive i had lying arround and all was fine, however i wanted to use sata for increased speed etc so got new motherboard and alls installed fine. however i decided i wanted to experiment i have a perfectly fine motherboard just lying arround and built a new system identical the first, which would only install to an ide drive, but with a different make dvd drive a samsung instead of a unbranded cheapo and now i get the dreaded no cd/dvd drive device driver, i'm gonna try tomorrow with the unbranded dvd drive to see what happens, i've already tried most of the suggested fixs off here.

i think i'll get a mac next or perhaps an i'll go old school and get a difference engine at least you can hit it with an hammer

If they have Vista drivers, they should work in W7

yeah tried the vista drivers, still no sata, wont even find a sata drive even after installing it to an ide drive then putting a sata drive in, loads of topics about this on the asus k8u-x forum at asus....

I received several replies and, folks, it ain't good. This one is from Nvidia, the chipset manufacturer:
Hello John,

As informed earlier the we do not have driver for ULI M1689 driver supporting Windows Vista 64-Bit. Since, you are not able to find any driver from Windows update, I suggest you to contact the motherboard manufacturer and check if they have any driver supporting Windows Vista 64-Bit. As NVIDIA manufacture only basic chipset and sell them to different motherboard manufacturer. They design and manufacture the entire motherboard.

Please feel free to contact us, if you have any questions.

And here's one from ASUS (who did not take the trouble to email me but rather posted it on their website):
Unfortunately the k8 series is not compatible with vista as te chiipset manufacturers never sent us anydrivers.

So we've got two companies playing the blame game and we're stuck in the middle. Not to worry; I'll do my best to publicize the fact that ASUS motherboards and NVidia chipsets don't support the technologies they say they do. Yes, I'm annoyed.

so guess i,m stuck with a motherboard that wont recognise sata drives with a windows OS installed

Win 7 & IDE/SATA DVD/CD

Installation issues using IDE drives on a system with a SATA interface are fairly well documented. The easiest solution found above by trial and error is often to have only SATA devices until installation is complete.

WELL I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM AS FAR I KNOW.........
JUST INSTALL THE DVD DRIVE DRIVER IN YOUR PRESENT OS AND THEN TRY TO INSTALL THE WINDOW...........
IF ANYONE IS NOT HAVING ANY OS PRESENTLY ON HIS PC/LAPTOP THEN JUST INSTALL THE DRIVER IN A REMOVABLE DRIVE FROM ANOTHER LAPTOP AND PLUG IT DURING INSTALLATION ........ WHEN DURING INSTALLATION IT IS ASKED FOR THEN JUST BROWSE FOR THE REMOVABLE MEDIA CARRYING THE DRIVER AND LET IT GO.........
FOR THOSE WHO ARE HAVING LIGHTSCRIBE DRIVE CAN DOWNLOAD THEIR DRIVER FROM
LightScribe - Downloads - Windows
OK.....

Well I was having the same problem, but my fix was very different, and rather simple.

It all started out with the extremely slow install, so I looked into that issue, Google results told me to disable the floppy in the bios. That fixed the dreaded slow install/hang issue. But before I did that, I had the DVD as boot, and disabled the SATA drives. That let me to the issue that is talked about in this thread.

I but my sata from disabled, to 2nd boot, and all went well. Hope this helps others, as this was my worst windows install experience ever.
