Freecom Ext. HD

Hi everyone and a happy new year to you all. I am new to this forum and wish to ask a question if i may.
My wife bought me an HP desktop, the one in PC world with the 1 TB hard drive. Well i am pleased with it. What I am not happy about is that my Freecom external harddrive will not work with it.
The drive was bought 4 years ago and runs on XP ok. I loaded up the drivers from the disc but after i pluged the drive in (usb) it stopped all my usb ports working. I had to switch off with the power button on the computer and start up again but the usb ports were still not working.
To cut the story short I took the system back using the restore function in safe mode. I have looked for drivers on the net and Freecom's web site with no joy.
I was wondering if anyone has any good sujestions other than give the drive away and get another.
The thing is i have a lot of family stuff on it. They are all backed up onto discs but i would like to use the drive.
thanks for any advice you can give me.

Hi and welcome

Quick question when you installed the driver did you install it in compatibility mode?

Piece of cake. right click the installer>properties>compatibility>check xp. It just tells win 7 to treat the files differently

Good Luck

Why do you need to install drivers? My freecom ext HD just plugs straight into the USB port and is treated as a removable drive.

If it has gone 'poof' and is not working any more and there are files on it you need, simply strip out the bog standard IDE drive from inside it and try it it as an internal drive. It worked for me when the Freecom drive I had kept disconnecting at random points in time.

It has not gone wrong MrMephitis, its just that I have a windows 7 computer now and the drive was bought a few years ago and does not seem to work on that so i am trying to find a way round it.
Yours is still a good idea when all else fails though. Thanks.

Hi everyone. Today I have succesfully installed my drive. Firstly I uninstalled anything I had put in before that is related to the drive. Restarted the computer.
My first attempt worked. I just pluged it in and it was recognised ok. All seems well but I will be back here, or I should say hanging around this forum. It seems to be the best I have seen around the net for a while.
Two other forums I visit are aired by computer magazines and are very busy, this one however seems more up to date with other issues.
Thanks to everyone for your advice. All of which I will keep in mind if anyone has the same problems.
