Thank you all three. Firstly, I would like to restate that this isn't a laptop problem but a desktop. That not being a problem, I did as you suggested Thefabe and here is the result:

    USBSTOR\DiskGeneric_USB_CF_Reader___1.01
    USBSTOR\DiskGeneric_USB_MS_Reader___1.03
    USBSTOR\DiskGeneric_USB_SD_Reader___1.00
    USBSTOR\DiskGeneric_USB_SM_Reader___1.02

Complutesplus! hopefully you will see this reply of mine and suggest whether that Acer Card Reader driver is still applicable. Pebbly! Its a HP, so once again I'm not sure whether a Dell driver would solve the problem. Not being an expert on these matters I will leave the suggestions to you experts.

    Many thanks.

    Try It

try the driver it does not matter that it's for an Acer laptop what matters is that it's J Micron a lot of times you just need to know who actually made the hardware your dealing with and find a driver for that hardware and not worry about well it's an HP desktop look for an HP driver I mean sometimes that works but most of the time you have to get very resourceful to get stuff to work so just try it as I have had success with it.

Ok, I downloaded and ran the "setup" file. Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether I have to go into control panel now following the same process as I did to identify the original driver and select another or should it be automatic. If the later, then it didnt work. I still have 4 greyed out drives which weren't the case under Vista.

    Thanks for you continued help

Yes, I have tried running the setup in admin mode. Not sure about the "compatability mode" bit, but it says that it has installed successfully. However, I cant seem to find where. But that might be due to my own stupidity of course.

    The model number:
    Manufacturer HP-Pavilion
    Family 103C_53316J
    Product Name RN620AV-ABJ v7080jp

Yes, a Japanese version. I hope it helps though. Beside this I think that Windows 7 is just great compared to Vista.

On the font of the PC it only says HP Pavilion V Series. On the Support Guide front cover it says:

"HP Pavilion Desktop PC v7000 Series" I know from looking at the HP USA site that there are quite a number of PCs in the v7000 series though.

Pebbly you are a genius. I had only tried two of my SD cards and neither of them worked. Just tried a Compact Flash and that worked. Now if I can only solve the SD problem. Of course, it could be the reader or the SD themselves. I will try again in a couple of hours time when I have a little more time.

Many thanks for your help all.
