    Acer Aspire 5720 x64 drivers

    Hi all,

Looking for drivers for the x64 version of win 7 but acer.co.uk only has drivers for x86. Is there a way to find out if the vista x64 versions will be compatible? Heard that some have been modified.

    Ta in advance,

    - Kim x

Often that's precisely what you use when not seeing any updates labeled "7" on them. The two versions(Vista, 7) are close and will see most Vista(x86, x64) drivers work out well of 7.

The best way to find out how things will go is try out the Vista 64 driver updates for that model. Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Notebook, Aspire 5720

okies tried the drivers on the acer.co.uk site (vista x64 home prof) but none want to install so I assume they are not compatible. I did notice that win7 x32 is listed in the os menu but no x64 which is odd.

Also why is it sometime that the x32 is referred to as x86??

Hi,x86 is actually just notation for a CPU instruction set which has been used in most modern day processors. x86 actually has three different subsets: x86-16 (16-bit), x86-32 (32-bit) and x86-64 (64-bit).

The 32-bit version of x86 became so common that eventually the term "x86" by itself was known to be the 32-bit iteration. The newer 64-bit version can be referred to as it is above, but far more often is simply called "x64", which can understandably be confusing to someone who doesn't have a lot of knowledge concerning computer hardware, as it sounds like a step backwards!

Because of this, the 32-bit version of Vista is "x86", and the 64-bit version is "x64".

    Hope this helps.

I found their support site a little odd to start with since generally you see "Vista/7 x86" or Vista/7 x64" showing a particular driver will work on both versions of Windows. They split things up by editions of each version rather then platforms(32, 64bit) for each version.

The 64bit drivers for Vista Home Premium and Business would still work on the 64bit Vista Ultimate as well. Sometimes it's simply easier to go direct to the chipset or audio chip manufacturer over going to the particular brand's support to find the drivers you need if not through the Windows updates>optional for hardwares.

I ended up on another download page as well. http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads_gd.html
