Canoscan LiDE 35 Windows 7 64bit driver  

I registered just to post a big "thank you" to scoutfu for his very helpful solution. THANKS!!

My Canon LIDE35 scanner now works in Windows 7 64-bit with SP1 using Canon Toolbox v4.9.

Just one note, I did get the "unable to select the TWAIN source". At first I tried version 4.5 of the toolbox program, but it would not install. It said I had to have WinXP or Win2000.

I found another post that said to try adding the path to the environment variable to the twain folder. I added %SystemRoot%\twain_32\CNQL60 (%SystemRoot% = c:\windows) to the PATH environment variable and it worked perfectly.

Here's some quick steps:

1. Right click Computer icon on desktop. Click "Properties" and a window should appear.
2. Click "Advanced system properties" in upper left corner and a new windows appears.
3. Click the "Advanced" tab at the top.
4. Click "Environment Variables" button in bottom right and a new window appears.
5. In the bottom section, called "System variables", scroll until you see the system variable "Path".
6. Double click "Path" variable. Add "%SystemRoot%\twain_32\CNQL60" to the end of "Variable value" field.
7. IMPORTANT: Be careful not to delete anything that is already there in this field.

I hope this works for others.

Well, scoutfu, I also want to say thanks! I was searching for a picture online of my scanner so I could list it for sale, and found your thread instead, and now my scanner works again! What's really weird is that it had gotten slow and I always thought it was dying but now it's as fast as when it was new. How weird is that!
Just a couple notes for any other late comers:
The link to the driver didn't work so I just googled the driver name and found a canon site with it on there.
Also the links to the CS toolbox yielded software in Spanish or Italian so again I just googled Canoscan toolbox and found a Canon site with version 4.9.

This was the missing piece for me. I haven't done further testing to confirm why only some of us need this, but it occurs to me this may be needed when installing to a destination other than the C drive (or if any other directories are non-standard). I had previously installed the scanner on this same computer without problems, but when I updated my USB drivers yesterday, all of sudden the scanner stopped working. I went back to my notes, got the drivers and Toolbox re-installed, but kept getting the error when actually scanning that it couldn't find the TWAIN device. I bet that I had previously allowed the Toolbox to install to the C drive, but as my SSD boot drive (C) has gotten fuller, I try to install everything to my much larger D hard drive.

Updating the PATH environment variable immediately restored function. AWESOME!

I want to thank scoutfu and others. I just want to point out two things:

1. I had to put "C:\Windows\twain_32\CNQL60" on PATH which is not in the original post, but noted by others.
2. Please note this: Windows treats each of USB ports separately! If you are trying to make it work and you are trying different ports, make sure that you setup the LiDE 60 driver each time you try new port. If the port has the right driver installed you should here scanner's initialization move when it's attached to the port.

Just a quick update:
Note that works for a Canon LiDE 35 scanner on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OS.

You do not need to download a driver off the web. The Canon web site will say something like “no driver is required for this OS or the driver comes with the OS” – which it clearly does. I used a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OEM DVD and driver is copied over as most others are during installation. Once installed, the LiDE 60 driver offers a new interface for scanning into MS Word, etc.

Here is the driver installation process:

• Computer > right click > Manage > Device Manager > Other Devices > expand and select the CanoScan device with the yellow triangle.
• Select “Update Driver Software”.
• Select “Browse my computer for driver software”. This button that takes you to another window.
• Next select the button “Let me pick from a list of devices from my computer”.
• Next, select “Imaging Devices”, and then click Next. A dialog window is displayed.
• In the Manufacturer column, select “Canon Inc.”, then in the Model column, select LiDE 60; this may be last in the list. Then click on the Next button.
• You will likely get a warning window about compatibility problem. Select Yes in this window and the driver will install.

Thanks for your effort -- however there's (for some people) a much easier (and IMO a more elegant) solution :

Run the scanner in a Virtual Machine -- I still keep an XP virtual machine around for running old but perfectly good hardware around for example a Professional grade Minidisc deck (Studio quality) and an old HP Plotter for engineering.

You can run an XP machine with VMware vmplayer (free) and the XP machine is quite safe - you don't have to connect the VM to the internet. Also when you finally get rid of the hardware you don't have to remove it from your machine.

(Another advantage of the VM is that you can power it on from DIFFERENT HOSTS so you don't have to make your changes if you want to connect your hardware to a different machine --say you have several laptops for example).

The advantage also with the VM is that you only need to have it operating when you want to - and you don't have to make any changes to your HOST system

Louarnold, thank you so much. I was one hour in downloading all kinds of drivers and reading forums, when I saw your suggestion and it worked. All in less than 5 minutes.

I'm running Windows 8 64 bit. I thought my scanner had reached the end of it's days. Of course Cannon says it's incompatible, so I searched and searched. Your fix works on windows 8 64 bit as well. I too have registered for this forum specifically so I could congratulate and thank you. You must have worked very hard on this.
