Windows 7: HP LaserJet 1200

I'm trying to install a LaserJet 1200 as a network driver.

The HP EZInstall fails because it looks for a printer directly connected to the PC.

I downloaded the "Microsoft driver update for HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL 5".
(I checked, the host of the printer, an XP machine, has PCL drivers)
Win7 doesn't find a driver in that directory either. (I unpacked the cab. The second time around... :)

Any ideas I should try?

EDIT: I'm on 7600 x64.

If I plug the printer directly to my PC then it gets installed without a hitch. Weird.

HP 1200 vs Windows 7 Enterprise

I've been using Windows 7 Enterprise, testing it on one workstation before installing it elsewhere, and one of the problems has been installing a HP 1200 as a network printer. I believe that I found a solution.

I do see a universal print driver for the HP1200 here:

64-bit:

HP LaserJet 1200 Printer series- Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

32-bit:

HP LaserJet 1200 Printer series- Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

The filename indicates it was designed for XP to Vista, but the description now includes Windows 7. And I verify that it does work with Windows 7.

I tried both PCL5 and PCL5 universal drivers, in both traditional and dynamic mode, but they all failed. After starting the installation the add printers windows pops up and after checking windows update, it exists with driver not found.

According to HP

Quote:
LaserJet model specific printer drivers are currently available within the Windows 7 operating system. Installation of these drivers can be performed via Devices and Printers , formerly known as the Add Printer Wizard .
So it shouldn't even check win update, unless it has no idea what the shared printer is. So there is some kind of a problem between this win7 and the XP on the other end.
If I boot in XP32 instead of win7x64, the same shared printer on the same network works. Is there something I should do in XP to make it compatible with 7...?

I wrote about this problem in another thread and a solution that was presented was to:

Let Win 7 install the printer driver by hooking it up directly to the computer.

Then go to the printer in the control panel and ad a local printer port for it using the network path \\workstationname\printer

Worked for me.

Nope, same thing: finds the shared printer, starts windows update, fails to find a driver for "HP LaserJet 1200 Series PCL". So it does detect the product properly through the network, it just can find a driver... a driver which is already installed since direct connection works...
I wonder if it's significant that it says "PCL" and not PCL5 or 6 as seen on the universal driver page.

Zoltan, did you receive a disk with your printer?

Sorry, I totally forgot about filling out my system specs, but it's done now.
I don't have the disks (I inherited the printer).

follow this link

Good morning Zoltan,
After review it appears you have a legacy printer which HP may/not support in the future. So I suggest this workaround.
  • Remove/disconnect your printer from your system
  • Remove all HP softare, including any and all printer drivers. The reason for this is Windows 7 attempted installation which failed and their is some residual files in your system which will interfere with a new installation.
  • Reboot your system
  • Follow the attached link and download the driver/software package designated vista 64 onto your desktop or a known location.
  • HP LaserJet 1200 Printer series- Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center
  • Right click your mouse over the downloaded file and view the drop down menu, select compatability mode XP 64 SP1 or 2, go up the drop down menu and find Administrator, double click "run as administrator" The drivers should begin installing.
  • After the drivers have installed connect your printer. OS 7 should automatically detct new hardware and begin the installation process.
Report back with your progress.

Regards,
Adrian
