Hope this works for you also!

Cindy:

Look at the posts above.

I copied the following:

Control panel then Settings then Add Printer
Choose "Add a local printer". Click on "Create a new port". Use Local Port.
Next dialogue box is "Enter a Port Name."
Type in the path to the printer: \\(computer name)\(printer name).
Then select the proper driver, and print a testpage.

I have a the HP Laserjet 1220. It's the 1200 with a copy option. I used Windows Xp for years and it took many tries to find a driver with configuration options for two-sided printing. Windows 7 64-bit recognizes and installs a driver that has a two-sided option, but the printer will only print one-sided.

I bought it in 2001, but there is nothing wrong with it and paper is too expensive to print one-sided.

The printer will print two-sided when connected to an XP machine.
Hey Barefoot. Did you find a solution to the double sided printing problem you describe above? If so, please let me know, as I have exactly the same problem since I upgraded from an XP to a separate Win7-64 laptop last week.

For everyone who is still having these troubles, please follow the instructions above by Zoltan. I wrestled with my new Win 7 x64 client trying to get it to connect to my LaserJet 1200, which is connected to an XP client by USB. Despite having shared out the printer, and being able to connect to it by my x64 client, I COULD NOT get the driver to install correctly until I followed the directions above EXACTLY. Yes, you need to make it a LOCAL PORT, and you will already have the right driver on your (up to date w/windows updates) Windows 7 install. If you have previously tried to install another way, make sure you uninstall and delete anything you did before, and then REBOOT before starting over with the instructions above. THANKS AGAIN, Zoltan, Adrian, and everyone, I spent 5 HOURS TODAY messing with this, and I'm an admin. (Maybe not the best admin, but...)

Hey Kevdoggy,

thanks for that. Does your HP LJ1200 now also print double sided under Windows 7 (as presumably it did under XP)?

Double-sided?

Sorry, I haven't tried two sided printing on the LJ1200 yet. Good luck.

Laser Jet HP 1200 Printer

This forum is a blessing, like many of you I was frustrated after getting a new PC to not be able to hook up my HP Laser Jet 1200 Printer due to not having a USB cable (have the LPT cable) and being told by HP that they no provide support for the 1200 printer and that it would not be compatible with Windows 7. From your Forum I can now see we can keep our printer.

I do have a question, I understand one can purchase a USB cable for connection. If any of you has done so, can you tell me what I need to get?

Appreciate your help.

USB Cable

You should be able to find a cable at Radio Shack, Amazon, CyberGuys, etc. They come in different lengths. You want a A-B cable.

What happens to me is Windows Update offers to update the driver, but it always fails. The solution offered by Windows Troubleshooting is non-existent. I've had this printer for about ten years. One of the reasons I bought a laser was it's lifespan. It printed double sided in Windows XP, but when I tried XP 64-bit it would not print two-sided. I have no idea why the 64-bit drivers won't allow it.

I thought I'd try this again and here is what happened. I disconnected the printer and removed the drivers and rebooted. I downloaded the 64-bit XP/Vista driver. When right clicking there was no option for compatibility mode. The driver installed but when I connected the printer it installed the drivers that come with Windows. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

It still refuses to print two sided. The option is there in properties. I hate wasting paper!
