Thanks very much for the suggestion. I've now 'got' them, but I don't know what to do with them, they don't seem to have an executable, as such. Any suggestions please?

Yes they were an HP site download and I was running Vista when I installed the printer in the first instance. Had no problems with running it when I installed Windows 7 build 7000 OR 7057 initially either.

You must use internet explorer for this.
Go to Microsoft Update Catalog
click on the link for your driver a window will pop up. In this window it will show you which architecture it is for, 32 bit is (x86) 64 bit is (AMD64). Once you have the correct architecture click the "add to basket button" then close the pop up. Now back in the main page click "view basket" (top left corner under search), from this page you can click the download button for your driver.

Sorry I thought you meant the page did not seem to have an executable. When you go to update it in the device manager just browse to where the cab file is, it will extract what it needs.

You guys have been so kind and helpful, and I have resolved the problem. You are not going to believe what it took.
I had the printer connected to the PC via a 4 port USB hub. On a wild hunch, I connected the printer directly into a USB port in the PC.
Voila!!. Windows 7 immediately recognised the printer presence and set to install all the correct drivers and search for, find and install updates and the whole thing!!!
Is it any wonder sometimes you see video's of nice ordinary people throwing their PC's across the office or through the window?
What's the lesson to learn here??

Anyway thanks guys, I actually have learned several very useful things from your helpful comments.

32bit or 64??

I have a Studio 17 Home Premium addition and am not sure how to find out whether it is a 32bit or 64 bit. I looked at the specs but it doesn't have that info.
I also went to the microsoft download catalogue to download my HP Photosmart 2570. It was downloading for over two hours and then seemed to be stuck on about 90% of the download. I finally just cancelled it as I felt I had given it enough time. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks. meajha

Hi meajha, right click on My Computer and select Properties, System Type, it will tell you in there
if it is 32 or 64 bit.
