    Hi mossflower,

Try the instructions I found here: Wireless Xbox 360 Controller Receiver For Windows Not Detecting/Working

    http://www.dealextreme.com/forums/Forums.dx/Forum.31881~threadid.504450

    Right click on Computer
    Go to Properties
    Click on Device Manager
Right click on the Unidentified Device
    Go to Properties
    Go to the Drive tab
    Click on Update Driver…
Browse my computer for driver software
Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
Windows Common Controller for Window Class
Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows Version: 2.1.0.1349 [8/13/2009]
    Update Driver Warning
    Click Yes
Let me know if that helps at all. Good luck!

    Cheers,

It doesn't come up with 'Windows common controller for windows class'
It shows up as 'Microsoft Windows common controller for windows class' so look out for that instead! Hope that helps :)

So Im having a problem with my controller and my receiver. Ive installed all the drivers and everything seems fine until i go to play a game. It will recognize the controller but wont respond. For example when I press the xbox button in the middle of the controller it says my controller is the 2nd controller instead of the first. It seems like im having a Ghost Controller issue. Because when I turn off my controller and go to the xbox accessories status it says i have 2 controllers on. How can I fix this its been a whole week since Ive been able to play anything.

While you have the Receiver plugged in, go to Device Manager and see how many controllers it shows.

You could just uninstall it, and reboot the computer to see if that fixes it.

    Otherwise try reinstalling again.

After I do these steps, the installer takes a good 15 minutes to, well, install, and afterward it comes up with a popup saying "Windows found driver software but encountered an error... The data is invalid", leaving the Unknown Device as Unknown and not working.

Note: Instead of being called "Windows Common Controller for Window Class", it's called "Xbox 360 peripherals", but it does come up with "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows" in the next page.

EDIT: I should also note, there are no numbers after "Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows"

Edit 2 (Problem solved!): So, I am incompetent. The controller now works. I forgot to restart my machine after downloading the drivers.

Will it work on a Samsung Galaxy S2?

Hi Walker. I just made a quick account to thank you because those steps you gave Mossflower really helped me a lot. I also wanted ask you question relating to a Galaxy S2 I have.
Question: Does the updated driver stay with the wireless receiver, or is it stored in the pc?
Also, if it is inside the receiver will that help in any way to establish a better connection with my phome?
Because, I've been having some problems with it not being able to sync. I don't if its the phone or the receiver that neede that driver update.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm going crazy with this issue, and nothing seems to work.

I have an authentic Microsoft XBOX 360 wireless controller+receiver, that used to work. I reinstalled Windows on my PC, and now I can't get it to work.

    I installed Xbox360_64Eng

The receiver shows up as an Unknown Device under Devices and Printers.

It also shows up as an Unknown Device under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager.

When I try to update the driver manually (through 'Have Disk'), it tells me the xusb21.inf file is not compatible with the device (more specifically: The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If your folder contains a driver, make sure it is signed to work with Windows for x64 based systems.)

When I try to pick the driver from the list, my list looks completely different than the screen shots I have seen online. I have two windows side-by-side. On the left hand side I see a list of manufacturers, and I pick Microsoft. On the right hand side then, I see nothing related to an XBOX 360 controller.

I have no idea what to do.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you kindly in advance!!!
