Windows 7: Intel i5 CPU Malfunction in 64-bit Win 7

That is the weirdest thing I ever heard. Reading this further compounds the mystery...

Quote:
After you physically replace the processor (CPU) with a similar model of processor on a Windows Vista-based computer or on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, the old processor information may still appear in Device Manager under Processors. In Windows Vista, the updated processor information does correctly appear in the Welcome Center in System and Maintenance in Control Panel.

This problem occurs because the system does not detect that a new processor has been installed.
Device Manager does not show updated processor information on a Windows Vista-based computer or on a Windows Server 2008-based computer

Based on both those statements, I would think this problem would occur "after" replacing a processor on an already fully functioning Windows OS. NOT during an OS install.

Just Weird

At any rate you got it working. Good

You're telling me it's weird. I work professionally in at an IT consulting firm at a helpdesk and have never seen this issue before, not in the 200+ computers I've built or setup from Dell, and not in servers either. I was thoroughly miffed that I had to come home from fixing other people's computers, and then the computer I just built and upgraded to Win 7 64-bit is giving me problems. Oh the joy of always doing what I do at work.

Hope this helps future users as well. I also copied the guts of this thread over to Microsoft Answers. I'm hopin' a MS developer will see this and produce a hotfix or kb update to resolve any other instances of this issue (if there are any). Here's the article at MS Answers: ERROR CODE 52 - Intel i5 Processor driver (64-bit).

Thanks Sygnus,

Well, we though it might be a CPU based error, and it was...from a Windows perspective. Weird.

Glad you got it fixed, and good luck.
