If you're hearing the sound then it's an indication that Windows has at least detected something in the port. It could be that you need drivers for the hardware that you are plugging in.

What is it you're plugging in by the way?

Another thing to try is to check your device manager (Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Device Manager) this will show any issues with your hardware. You will notice problems highlighted with a yellow exclemation mark, if you right-click the offending device you can choose to 'Update device software'. This will search 'Windows Update' online for any device drivers for this device (if any).

See pic below (note: i've used just any device as an example)

    Hi Dark Altair,

Your motherboard has onboard sound. Have you got the latest drivers, which are probably the "Realtek" ones? :)

Try right-click on the SM Bus Controller & 'Update Device Software' to see what happens

Ah, do you have the installation CD that would have come with your nVidia hardware (even if it's onboard)? You might have to install the drivers in compatability mode for Vista. This should clear up the issue, then you can use windows update to see if there are any newer drivers.

ADDIOTIONAL: You could also try booting in 'Safe Mode with Networking' & try again under those conditions. Before trying the above.
