That's a good feature, but some hardware can't be automatically identified by windows update, and will show up as an unknown or generic device in the Device Manager.. so you still have hunt for drivers for older machines. There a lot of machines from 2004-2006 that could easily handle windows 7 given a boost in memory, but if they never had support for vista, there aren't going to be drivers for windows 7 either... so you have to be a little creative in your search
yeah none of this works. thanks for all the help. i'm trying to find xp right now. thanks again.
Don't give up on Windows 7, as madtownidiot says you should be able to find drivers that'll work.
There is a possibility that your computer cannot run Windows 7. Did you check the Upgrade Advisor? Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

I can think of at least a dozen computers running windows 7 right now that failed the upgrade advisor.. but if it does pass the tests, you'll know that windows 7 has drivers for all of your hardware... unfortunately if your laptop has no operating system at present, it's a bit difficult to run tests. According to the specs for your model.. there should be no problem getting 32-bit windows 7 to install.

If you have Win7 prof on it, does it run ok, except for internet connection ? Do you have any USB flash drives that you can transfer stuff to the laptop ? How about a USB to ethernet cable adapter ? Can you run any system info programs to get us more details on the hardware ?
