Inspiron 6000 and Windows 7 -- Drivers  

Good morning, SevenForum friends,

I have installed Windows 7 on my Inspiron 6000 and all I need are drivers that will work. I once had an installation of Windows 7 RC, but I didn't think ahead and take down the names of the drivers that worked (and I was able to connect via wi-fi, have nice sound, and good video with those drivers that I installed).

Here is a thread in which there is some discussion as to the specs of my computer. If you need any more information, I've got a full print-out of all the specs. https://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/65646-complicated-situation.html.

Well my mind reading power has been used up today, so you're going to have tell us which drivers you need, unless someone else has any MR power left in the tank.

Let's see, it appears that I need a wireless driver, an audio driver, and a video driver.

Dell has only developed drivers for that model through XP. You may be able to use those (especially if you are 32bit) by installing the drivers in "compatibility" mode. To do that right click the installer>properties?compatibility>check XP

It turns out all I needed to do was connect an ethernet cable to my computer and then watch it automatically update the wireless and video drivers. I was able to enter in the service tag for my Dell on the Drivers & Downloads website and it gave me a recently updated audio driver that works perfectly.

If you need to know what drivers you need, go to Dell's site with your service tag number. It will show you what hardware shipped with your system (all the devices listed that you will need drivers for. Copy down the device type to the letter (it makes it much easier to find the right drivers that way. You need to then download the xp drivers from Dell's site for your hardware and use a file extractor program (Ex: Winzip, 7-zip) to extract the files (even if it an .exe file it has an archive of files in it) to a new directory you create and provide a name for it to make it easy for you to locate. Once you have your new directory created, extract the downloaded driver file into it, and when you finish loading it into the new directory, look for a file that looks like a piece of paper with a little blue gear in the bottom left hand corner of the icon. it should be hte setup .inf file which is your driver file you will use. Go to the device manager then click on the device you are putting the new driver into. click on the device and then you will see a window, select the bottom selection which will indicate you will find the driver yourself. then on the next window, select the bottom selection again, which will give you the option to select the device you are loading, click have disk (the disk is the file you extracted and stored on YOUR HARD DISK. Find your directory, and follow the directory down until you find the .inf file. Click on it, then click next and it will show you the device driver you are about to install. Click next again, and it will load the driver. once completed it may prompt to restart the system, which once done the new driver will be loaded and working. Good luck. You need to do things old school sometimes to make windows work.
