    HP 6730b - Fingerprint & BIOS

    Hi All

So I bought a HP 6730b yesterday second hand and it had Vista and the fingerprint recognition worked. So I installed Windows 7 as a clean install, not updated from vista but formatted. So now I dont know how to get it back as that was one of the reasons I got it

Also I noticed there was BIOS password and I dont know it. Whats the best steps to reset it? Takes out the CMOS battery?

    1) If you dont know the bios password, how did you get to the desktop? In any case, try the following:

    1) Shut down the computer.
    2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.
    3. Disconnect the power from the computer by first unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet and
then unplugging the AC adapter from the computer.
    4. Remove the battery.
    5. Remove the real-time clock (RTC) battery.
    6. Wait 5 minutes.
    7. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the computer.
    8. Connect AC power to the computer. Do not reinsert any batteries at this time.
    9. Turn on the computer.

Hopefully that will clear the bios password.

If that doesnt work, you'll need to try some 3rd party apps like ERD Commander.

    2) This is the HP support page for your model. Select your OS from the list, then download the latest fingerprint reader driver.

Its been my experience that even removing the BIOS battery will not reset the BIOS password on a laptop. It works in a desktop PC but on most laptops the password info is stored in an EEPROM. Removing the power does not erase an EEPROM, it has to be reprogrammed. What that means is you need to know the password to change the password. If you can prove ownership the manufacturer may be able to help you out. The BIOS may have a back door password that teck support can use to get in. If you Google it you might get lucky and find one that works. That info can be hard to find as you can imagine the manufactures don't like to see it on the interwebs.

There should be two levels for the BIOS password. One just restricts you from getting into the BIOS and the other one, I think its called system, will prompt you every time you try to load the OS. You just want to set the one for BIOS access, or set no password at all.
