Uninstall the printer completely. Then connect it via USB, and wait for Windows Update to install the printer driver. No further action should be needed.
I installed an old HP 1220c this way.

Ok, got it to work. thanks everybody! sillyman, your comment on uninstalling the printer was the key. It didn't click that the "unknown device" in my device manager was my printer till you mentioned that. From there I was able to install the workout driver as described.

I also have a Photosmart P1000. Having read through the threads, I have successfully installed the HP DeskJet 930C/932C/935C driver from Windows downloads to run the P1000. All seems to work fine. BUT - on printing text, the writing is "shadowed". (The shadow seems to shift phase, with the text sometimes coming into focus). Although I don't know if it's the printer or the driver, the printer worked fine previously with XP.
It seems the shadow appears on different colours, depending on the print quality as follows:
NORMAL: Black - marked shadow; Green - slight shadow; Red and blue - seem OK.
DRAFT: Black - OK; Green and blue - marked shadow; Red - slight shadow.
BEST: Black - slight shadow; Green, red and blue - seem OK

Does anyone recognise this as a printer, or a driver issue? If driver, is there a better one available for HP P1000?

HP Photosmart P1000 installed & running in Win 7

    Greetings, all,
Had the same problem with my P1000 - no driver. (The .enu package for XP from the HP website would not install - even after multiple attempts using various compatability settings. It would not find the printer.)
    STEPS:
    1. In "Devices and Printers" click "Add a printer"
    2. Select "Add a local printer" - IGNORING the "only if you don't have a USB printer" (Trust me.)
    3. Under the "Use and existing port" option, select "USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB)
    4. Click "Next" then "Windows Update"
    5. After a few seconds, the "HP Deskjet 930C/932C/935C" option will appear.
    6. Highlight it and click "Next"
VOILA'! Yeah, it miffs me that the printer name and icon are not for my P1000, but hey, "the proof is in the printing"! And, using the menus, I can even clean my cartridge.
Thanks for the tip on the 930C - something I'd never have tried otherwise.
I'm running Win 7 Professional on a MacBook Pro in a Bootcamp partition. FYI, with 4 GB RAM it SCREAMS on PC games!

    Ok, so here's my problem

Ok, so i learned that the driver for the deskjet 940c also worked as a dependable driver for the p1000. It works great....until i reboot my laptop. So here's my situation. I have a desktop running XP and a laptop running 7. they are both networked together and so i have my printer via network, via desktop. i.e. the desktop has to be on in order for my printer to work. For some reason, after i shut down my laptop i cannot restart it up again, except for safe mode. the problem is that the printer spooling is running and preventing my laptop from booting up. I got the driver from the desktop Windows Update because that's the one that is wired to the printer. I tried to download just the driver for windows 7 but it is included in the Windows Update for the laptop, and therefore is not available for download. I think i have to have that driver installed into my desktop in order to get everything to function properly. Any suggestions, comments will be greatly appreciated. I really hate to junk such a great printer out.
