5.1 with generic USB audio

I have a creative extigy and I was very pleased when windows 7 automatically detected it and used the generic USB audio drivers. However when I went to configure the card the only option was 2.0 Stereo. The device definitely has 5.1 output so is there any way to add that option?

First thing you will need to do is download the driver here:

Creative Worldwide Support > Extigy

From what I am reading you will have to run it in XP compatible mode. It is an older external sound card and may have issues otherwise. Right now Windows is just using a generic driver and cannot access the features of the card as it doesn't know any better till the Creative driver tells it so

Thanks for the fast reply, I should have mentioned I tried that before posting, to no avail. The thing is I know that the generic USB audio driver can do 5.1 output for other cards, so I was just wondering if there was some way of forcing it to at least attempt to do so with this card as if stereo works with the generic driver, it seems like 5.1 should too.

Sorry double post! When you right click on the speaker icon by the clock, click playback devices, when that opens right click an open space and select, show disabled and disconnected devices. Let's see if it even sees it as an option first. You may have to select it as a default before it an be used.

I am however reading many folks having the same issue with this card. Can't hurt to try though

Sorry for the late reply. I can see disabled and disconnected devices. That's not my issue though. Like I said it detects the sound card and installs the generic USB audio drivers which work for the most part, but when I go to playback devices and click configure on my extigy on the first screen where it provides an option for the number of audio channels stereo is the only option. With my onboard sound card I can choose between stereo, quadraphonic, 5.1 and 7.1. I know there are other cards that use the 5.1 option with the generic USB audio drivers (see http://ftp.terratec.de/Audio/Aureon/...uration_GB.pdf ) so I'm just wondering if there's some way I can force that option. Perhaps a way to trick it into thinking my card is the terratec card?
