Windows 7: Adapt a 32-bit driver to run on 64-bit

18 Jul 2010   #11

Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

I got my memory card reader to function perfectly fine with the 32bit driver, but I had a BSOD problem and a base system device in DM. I looked around and found out that what I downloaded from Dell only contained the 32 bit driver, not the 64 bit one (Dell claimed it had both). I ended up getting the right driver from HP. A lot of people were dealing with the exact same problem. They had the card reader working, but with the wrong driver and once in a blue moon, got a BSOD. So once again, they can make the hardware function from time to time but always cause system instability either way.

EDIT: I must admit to not reading your entire post. MS keeps the FAQ simple. They know that the drivers might not work at all and will ALWAYS cause system instability (they made the OS after all). They could explain in eight paragraphs why sometimes the hardware will function and sometimes it won't and why it will make the whole thing unstable (i.e. BSOD) or they can just say "it won't work, don't do it, that would just be stupid."

EDIT2: to further clarify I was not suggesting he use the 32 bit driver, just offering an explanation of why he might have gotten the scanner to work before.
