I need both, but you're right, programs handle themselves quite well. The SFF is necessary even just for the one explorer window, since in a given day I open a new explorer window many times, and with the fix it's in the right place.

It sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't know if it was because it happend to someone long ago (with an old version) or if it was an issue related to windows alone and not SFF.

You could try browsing through the first 10 or so pages of this thread and see if someone had a similar problem or not (I'm a bit strapped on time at the moment). Otherwise the more methodical approach is to first try disabling auto-start to figure out if it's SFF related, if you haven't already.

Yes it was sff related..I fixed it and it no longer happens..I went ahead and deleted the system folder..It seems that folder was there from when i had vista before i had upgraded to windows 7.

    Delete or Reset The Database?

Is C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Roaming\ShellFolderFix the only location where sff databse information resides in a non portable installation?

I ask because I have noticed SFF doing some "odd" or unexpected things from time to time, and I want to delete the database to see if that helps.

Theoretically, I assume that by deleting ShellFolderFix.db the entire database would be erased, and all folder positions, etc. would be deleted. Is this accurate?

That is the only location yes. Exiting SFF then deleting the file will start over from scratch.

I just want to chime in here again and thank you, Georg.

I just checked in and saw that I am one rev out of date - I'm correcting that now.

You, with this one single helper application, have made my past year+ of Windows 7 computing bearable.

My hat is off to you. Can I send you a few bucks?

Thank you for the kind offer, but I'm good :) I'm just happy to help out anyone in the same boat as me/us.

    Hi Tweaker...

I love your ShellFolderFix recommendation and it works on my Win7 machine. However, since installing it, I have a weird problem. I'm wondering whether the problem is connected with ShellFolderFix and if so, how do I rectify it.

In middle of doing nothing, IOW idle, the machine locks up. No keyboard. No mouse. No contl-alt-del. Hiberation = Never.

It just locks up and the only way out is to depress and hold the power switch, then boot up from a cold start. It'll then work for a while, just fine, and suddenly lock up. Usually when not using either mouse or keyboard.

Checked...no new drivers for either mouse or keyboard. All drivers for both are in MS system.

And then it all comes back and everything seems fine...until it decides to lock up.

    I have a Dell Dimension XPS running Win7Pro v 6.1.7600 with Intel Pentium 4, 3.60 GHz, 3591 Mhz, 1 Core, 2 logical processors.

    Any suggestions?

As a new user of Windows 7, I want to thank all of the contributors for making the transition easier. I find it interesting that so many experienced users have similar issues. Special thanks to Tweaker for ShellFolderFix. My request echoes others that would love to find a way for persistent folder layout options as well as size and position.
