    Game screen stretched?

When I first got my computer a few months ago, fullscreen games that were set at a lower resolution than the widescreen monitor, were shown as a large square in the center, similar to watching a standard definition show, on an widescreen TV. Now the games cover the whole screen as a rectangle, and look terribly stretched. Is there any way to put it back?

Here's a mockup I did in photoshop to show what the old square looked like:

Have you either adjusted some settings like GPU scaling in your cards control panel, or adjusted a setting on the monitor?

It looks like it's set to 'fill' rather than 'maintain aspect ratio'.
