What!? I love Steam, far better than buying retail and much better than the likes of D2D.
Then I must be a relic because I absolutely loathe Steam. I still can't really grasp the concept of the digital purchase, I much prefer buying retail and having a box signify my ownership of a license to that game. I'm still old guard in that regard in that I need something physical to signify my purchase whereas digital, there's nothing that I can say "Here, I bought this". The funny thing is I'm only in my early 20s so I'm the lone exception at work as most are only in their early or mid-20s and love Steam yet I hate it.

Among people who dislike Steam that I sometimes find, the common reason apart from just hating having extra software on their PC is the fact that there is no physical medium proving the purchases. It sounds like an old fashioned concept but for some of us old fashioned people, that's just the way we prefer it.

Getting back to the count, I think I have about 40 or 50 PC games. I would need to do a full recount. I would not count the about 100 or so Windows 3.1 games I have as I can't even play them anymore nor did I ever really play them as they were given to me when I bought my first PC. Though I admit, I sometimes use the Steam Marketplace to get ideas of games to buy and then I go out to the store or Ebay (or half.com) and buy them.

To be honest mate, I do like having the box and all the nice bits with it. However, I find most game stores (at least in NI) to have a real crappy PC section. It's handy to be able to buy there and then and DL it, plus with my connection speed it's only usually a couple of hours. I also like being able to pre-load games, and having access to them all in one place. Plus their back-up feature is handy and I love the in game overly.

Edit: for sweet box onwership and the like I have my 360.

People who say steams sucks obviously dont know all the benefits of using steam and most of the modern games we play are through steam i wouldn't be surprised in another few years steam will be the basis of every game using its platform to start and apply applications

The best thing about steam is you can buy games none steam and use steam to operate them, to me this is great i dont have to go clicking on all kindsof icons steam manages the games for convience

I wonder what would happen is the gamming community all switched to a steam platform would the people who say steam sucks use it ? or would they just go ahead and start bootlegging ?

This sums it up so far for me. I purchase my first game and then have to download some lame tracking software that takes hours to load, then open the second game and it started doing the same thing. Maybe I'm not reading all the none included instructions (whats up with that?) I hate having my system tied up when all I wanted to do was start to figure out a couple of driving games. It's a learning curve thing because I've held off so long playing games (don't get me started on my reasons) I like to own my purchased content and don't like having to log into a site to do what ever you need to do to play a game. Maybe someone will take a moment to give me some background as to why this is so much better, it's just not what I thought I was getting. Regarding bootlegging I wouldn't even understand how or what your taking about to date after computing since 1980 I don't have one stolen mp3 file. I'm not trying to be holier that thou but I feel strongly that an artist took great pains to produce their art and it bothers me that just because it can be copied that anyone would think they had a right to! That's just me. Likely off tangent regarding pc games but maybe not. Just be nice and educate me why steam is the bomb !
