Don't know about 64bit, but for my 32bit install Avira is best, while I play games on steam. I really forget it is there while in L4D.

I use AVG and turn off active protection/scanning, and just let it do daily scans at night. It's less safe because it won't block an infected program before I run it, but at least it will hopefully detect it within 24 hours. Firefox does a scan on all my downloads anyways, and I don't usually run shady stuff.
