@NotyourHero: i'm not sure what you mean by 'steam trolls' - in modern internet usage, a 'troll' is someone who comes on a forum and starts slagging everything off. hmmm.

@everybody: anyway, i've just had some fair treatment from steam: i bought the vietnam expansion (as in my OP) from steam 2 weeks ago. at the time there was no mention of needing the base game on steam, as it was only an unlock code that i needed - i had already downloaded the game content as part of the patch. i did my research and found a couple of threads where both an EA member and a DICE man said that the expansion would work wherever you bought it or the game. so i paid up.

imagine my dissapointment yesterday, when i didn't get any unlock code sent to me from steam. further research confirmed my worst fears - buying vietnam on steam is only good if you own bc2 on steam. grrr.

so i sent an email to steam support, and this is the (edited) reply :

Hello, Thank you for contacting Steam Support. Please note that this message is part of a mass response and addresses a number of common issues with Battlefield: Bad Company 2. We are sorry for the confusion, however the Steam version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam and the SPECACT Kit DLC are not compatible with versions purchased outside of Steam. The CD Keys for retail and EA Download Manager purchases of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 cannot be activated on Steam. If you were gifted Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam or the SPECACT Kit by another user on Steam, please have that user contact us in a separate Steam Support ticket using their own Steam Support account. If you were able to purchase Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam or the SPECACT Kit through the Steam Store but do not own Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on Steam, as a one-time customer service gesture we will issue you a direct refund or Steam Wallet credit. ...
sounds like good news to me. :)

i would advise anyone with the same problem to do the same - get onto steam support.

oh, and i'm enjoying the expansion too! back to old-skool weapons without fancy scopes...flamethrowers as well!

Think I'll buy Vietnam sometime after Christmas when I have a bit more money. Looks good from what I've seen.

    It's worth the $15 mate.

The maps are drop dead gorgeous.

Although I gotta admit, the overall feel of the game (weapons handling, recoil, hit reg, etc) is EXTREMELY similar to Medal of Honor's.

Should be called Medal of Honor: Vietnam lol.

I am glad I decided to stay away from Steam to purchase Vietnam, I was reading yes it will work with my retail copy of BFBC2 and other posts saying no it won't work so I decided to be safe and got it from the EAstore

the maps look great and the way you play the maps and use the different guns in the Vietnam expansion is a refreshing change from the base BFBC2 game and well worth the $15 imho

    Yup.

I also thought it would work without a problem, but after seeing that Vietnam didn't show as a standalone game on your Steam's games list, it became very clear to me that people wouldn't be able to see their CD Key/code for it (instead it appears under your BFBC2 cd key's/codes, along with your SPECACT DLC/VIP Code).

As well Steam should seeing as they are the one causing the problem. As far as I'm concerned there is absolutely no reason for them not to send out the unlock code to anyone that purchased through them.

P.S. Before anyone comes on and starts wondering where their stats went, it looks like the stats server is having a hissy fit,

I don't know if I'm still in this boat but I'm still getting lag on normal BC2 maps... It's FPS lag. I used to run the game great when I had XP and BEFORE the latest patch...

I changed the settings down to medium but still very low FPS and lag...
