Mass Effect 2 Directx 10 problem

    Greetings,

What it is i recently bought ME2, installed it and it worked fine for a couple of missions then the keyboard and mouse would do nothing....well almost, could aim and fire and the ESC button worked, other than that nothing.

Found out that it could be a conflict with dx10 because the game is specifically designed to work with dx 9.0c, the question is is it possible to replace 10 with 9.0c? if so, how?

    Many thanks in advance

DirectX 10 includes version 9.0c, so that's not the problem. Might be a bug in the game itself, since it does have quite a few of them.

Try patching the game to the newest version.

You also may have some form of incompatability with the Keyboard you are using. Although rare, I have seen it happen before.

I've played through ME2 a few times with no such issues myself. The Direct X issue should not be a factor at all.
I mean, most Win7 setups will be DX 11 for the OS, Graphics Cards will either support DX 11,10, or 9.
And the game itself run on DX9.

However, updating your Direct X is a very good idea. theres a link to the DX updates in my signature.

I would certainly make sure you have the latest patches as already advised, and if that doesnt help start looking for other possible issues.

cheers for the advice, i had already patched to v1.02, so i guess my only option is to update the DX driver.... either that or get a new keyboard and mouse :-/

That is strange. I've played ME2 all the way through on Win 7 well over a dozen times and never had any major issues. Do you have a friends mouse and keyboard to see if in fact it's your mouse and keyboard. Your game could have also been corrupted somehow and you might need to reinstall and see if that works.

Not sure what a keyboard and mouse has to do with Directx but to clearify a few things.....

First off Mass Effect 2 is not a DX10 or 11 game, it's DX9. Though your 8800gs is a DirectX 10 card, and Windows 7 is DX11, since the game is a DX9 title, that's what windows will run in.

Bottom line is windows will run a game in the lowest DX mode of the 3 main components - OS, GPU, Game. Sort of like what WEI does in it's score.

See item# 6 here for a full explanation - Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues

Anyway, yes, you still need to keep your DirectX files updated as stated by Wishmaster.

Also, if you are having mouse and keyboard issues, check your drivers.

BTW..... Choose Language | BioWare Social Network

System requirements here says you need to Aug 2008 DX files, not that the game is DX10 or 11 - BioWare | Mass Effect | Information : FAQ

cheers for those sites, altho have checked and my drivers are upto date, did try running ME2 in compatibility mode with same results, i`m leaning towards a keyboard/mouse clash as suggested by Wishmaster because i loaded up Silent Hunter III (DX9 game) and it worked perfectly, off to see if i have a spare keyboard and mouse in my crap cupboard......err spare room lol!

Well again, whatever issues you're having with your keyboard and mouse has nothing to do with DirectX.

Also, I can assure you that Mass Effect 1 or 2 do not need to be ran in compatibility mode under Windows 7, and anybody having to run them in compatibility mode has other issues that compatibility mode may be hiding.

With that said, you might try reinstalling the game, see if that helps. Also, do you have keyboard and mouse issues anywhere else? Other games?
