    game share

dunno if this has been posted but i'm interested in optimizing this feature. i was attempting to dual boot 7 and vista but installation hang totally destroying vista loading( previous dualing xp and vista, didn't remove second hard drive when clean installing 7 to a new drive). i thought that my vista hard drive with about 3 years of data had been lost but after loadinig 7 i found the drive still there and all files intact(excecpt drive allocation changed from d to e). I have tried everything i know to load vista drive which imcluded disabling the 7 drive but bios does not recognize vista being present.

Back to the main issue; i can still acess all details and load my games from the vista hard drive but i do not know how to retrieve my save game data (sims 3 and warcraft 3(custom key fo dota)

sorry for the punctuation and spelling mistakes but if anyone can help that would be great

I have a partition just for games and all I do is copy and paste the save game files onto the new OS and the games work fine. Note though some games may also additional applications (depending on the game) for the game to work on a new OS. Example steam or punkbuster.

The save games are probably located in the My documents folder on your Vista if they are not in the installation directory. Copy and paste these folders into your new OS My Documents folder and the game should recognize them.

i just copied and pasted the whole folder and it works. i thought there might be registry issues but i was mistaken. I guess i can return the 1tb hdd i bought as i don't need to reinstall my games/ btw how did you make a partition for your games. did you make partition on new os or old? i will google punkbuster and steam as i have no idea what they are

i'm unsure weather to delete the vista folder as there is no point having duplicates and it seems i will be sticking with 7 due to lack of choice but i wonder if this will upset the system files as i have not installed the game but just copy pasted dir from one hdd to another

    1. If you are returning a HD I would recommend you wipe it first with DBAN (make sure that you only have the drive you want to wipe connected so that you do not accidentally wipe a wrong HD.) BTW: A1tb drive will take a while to wipe so do it when you have lots of time like before bed when you work in the morning or something like that.

    2. You can make them with the OS disc (Vista or Windows 7) and click the Custom installation/ drive options or within Windows via right click my computer/ manage/ disc management or with boot software.

    3. If you don't know what they are then you do not need them. Just so you know though, punkbuster is an anticheat addon to some games to prevent cheating online. Steam is a game client that allows you to buy, download and update your games.

I have trouble getting online when I run games from 7 that i have copied but simply fixed by running from the vista. All games work perfectly if I run from vista with the hiccup hear and there(espcially alt-tabbing = black screen of death) which i put down to the windows 7.

I found solution to boot problem which was stickied in installation forum(Search FTW).

A not so simple way of getting around network issues with game is installing on vista, if your dual booting and than run from 7.

Thanks for all the help K3VL4R and fast response. I will see about partioning for the games but I feel i must be rather delicate with windows 7.

The main reason that I even tried running games on their own partition from multiple OS's is to save on installation time. I have tried out a lot of new builds and I like a clean install over an upgrade.

Yes I will admit that some games on their own partition and running from multiple OS's will have problems. For me, all of the ones I have tried so far have worked fine, but I am not playing any online games right now either. I installed the games while running Windows 7, so that probably helps with compatibility also.

There is nothing about Windows 7 that I have seen that is delicate other than video drivers. By the time the public beta came out I was already convinced that Windows 7 was stable and have been using it as my primary OS since.
