Old Game Not Compatible With This Version of Windows

    Hi Guys,

I was trying to install Quake III the other night and thought I'd share a tip.

I'm running 64-bit 7, and when I popped the Quake CD in I got the error message that the game was not compatible with this version of Windows. I did a Google search and found tons of post complaining of the same problem. I had almost given up... almost.

Props to some Russian kid whom I forget, but here's what you do: put the CD in, let it spin up, then close it out.

Use the Windows Explorer to navigate to the CD's setup. In Quake there are actually 2. I had to navigate further to the second. Once you find it, right click on setup.exe, select properties, then click the compatibility tab. Check run in XP mode service pack 3, then check Run as Admin. Use that setup to install the game. Follow the same procedure for any and all patches.

I don't know why this method works, but it does.

Another method is to install the game on a machine running XP, then transfer the entire install directory over to your Windows 7 box; unfortunately, I don't have a machine running XP, so this was not possible.

Hope this helps anyone trying to run really old games. :) Have a good one.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah, running old games has proven to be an uphill battle with Windows 7. Guess Microsoft doesn't realize that people love firing up old games once in awhile. ~Laughs~
