    Far Cry 2 Irritation

I've seen people try to fix this problem on other forums and I'm wondering if it's a Windows 7 thing as most people seem to avoid giving advice on W7 except on here.

Basically 2 out of 3 times the game starts in windowed mode despite all efforts to correct it. I've presently got it starting from a shortcut which specifies maximised in it's properties, the game itself is running at full screen resolutions and the startup file it uses is set to full screen and maximised and I've set it to read only after having the little sucker keep resetting itself (one reason I think it may be a Win7 problem).

Any help would be cool as it's frustrating when you want to play for "a little while" (ie intend say 20 minutes and play for 4 hours) to have to argue to get the darned thing started right.

Oh and if anyone knows why this game may keep crashing to desktop after about 4 hours play time, I'd be really grateful (it's not overheating, running out of memory or having a conflicting program start up as far as I'm aware).

    Thanks.

Actually, it is. It's got a memory leak problem, which only seems to affect DX10. Once it reaches a certain usage level, it crashes. Getting 4 hours without a CTD is almost something to be proud of.

Try running in DX9 mode to see if it does the same thing.

Also try hitting alt-enter when it starts in windowed mode to bring it to fullscreen.

Okay dumb question, Alt+Enter? Never used it. I'm presuming that's the full screen shortcut. I would have just used the controls on the window but full screen option is greyed out.

This memory leak, I'm guessing that there's no fix as of yet. I was assuming that I wasn't running out of memory cause I've got like 8Gb but obviously that goes out the window eventually...

Thanks though. I'll try and find some means of tracking the memory usage on the keyboard's screen. At least that way I'd be able to save before it crashes.

Nope. No fix In fact FC2 has been unplayable for me in 7 since build 6801, so I gave up on it. In Vista it used to crash about the 1 hour mark. In 7, it was only a few minutes.

You could also try periodically alt-tabbing in and out of the game to 'refresh' the memory.

    Failing that, quick save often

That's odd. Your specs are similar to mine.. I would have thought you should be able to run it.

    Possibly a separate issue?

    Is that DX10 or DX9?

The problem in 7 for me was that it simply did not play nice with my Vista sound drivers. In the interim, some beta drivers have been released and I've also upgraded my video cards.

I've just re-installed it and will try it again. So far it's benched well.... but benches and game play are two separate things :)

    Update:

This game can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. Not only does it still crash in Seven with a stuck sound loop that requires a system restart, it is now doing the same thing in Vista (it never did before. It used to just silent CTD)

It's a pity, because I was getting mostly solid 60 FPS (v-sync on) at 1920x1200 maximum details with x8AA. I could only dream of that when I had my 4850

It's the only game that consistently does it...
