    Formula 1 '97

    Hello, i'm a new user. :)
I correctly manage to install this old game (F1 '97) in my computer which is running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
I can even play with it but after a race the screen goes black and it crash.

I found this message on Event Viewer...
I'm from Italy so sorry if the message is in italian...

    Nome dell'applicazione che ha generato l'errore: f197d3d.exe, versione: 0.0.0.0, timestamp: 0x34f69854

The strange thing is that the game is running perfectly fine in one of my laptops with Windows XP SP3.
I tried with all the compatibility modes but it didn't work out.
System is 100% fine because i recently do a fresh install of it.

It's a very old game so i can understand that it doesn't work well on Windows 7.
But if there is some tweaks for fix it i will be very happy !!

    Thanks.

P.S. Sorry if my english is not completely correct !

100% certain that DirectX is the problem, error is showing ddraw.dll is the fault, that's direct draw (one of the extensions for directx 7-8), you can fix this by following this thread > Blizzard's Diablo 1 - Vista Forums it will show you how to put your Direct X files into the windows directory (i know it's vista but 7 and Vista are the same).

    Thanks for your reply.
You mean that i should copy the DirectX files from the disc as they said on that thread ?

hehe, well, you can get it from steam if you want, i got it with the doom trilogy about 8 years ago, gathering dust in my loft :P
it was quite easy to get it working though, it kept asking me for dxplay.dll, but obviously the file system wasnt the same as windows 95's setup so i copied all the directx files on the disc into c:/windows/system and it worked like a dream.
And also change the install location ?

Yes. The only change that needs to be made is the install location. This needs to be changed from "Program Files" to something else, because as you know, Vista protects the "Program Files" folder.

My Diablo II is installed to "C:\Games\Diablo II".

In fact, this "trick" will work for many older games that may experience problems on Vista. Just change the default install location to some other unprotected folder, and the games should work.

i'll have a look into others who have this issue and see what we can do :)

    Edit:

right, had a look around, apparently the game has 2 executables, one called f197w.exe and one called f197d3d.exe, you might have better luck if you use the f197d3d.exe application, the other one is for voodoo 3DFX cards, god i miss those cards

Try installing the game in vert box with xp. I can see that the game would be slowed down that much by running in a vert bx

    vert? meaning virtual? xp mode?
unfortunately, xp mode can only be used on enterprise, professional and ultimate versions of windows 7 so that cannot be used unless the thread starter used something like virtualbox or VMWARE
