Strange issue with Dual-Shock (SCPH-1200) on eVGA 680i SLI

I hope someone hear can solve this issue for me.

Problem: I'm using the Dual-Shock (PS2) controller with my PC using a generic usb converter which looks like this: PIC.

Plugging in the controller into any one of the USB ports on my motherboard results in a "Code 43: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems" error. Other devices, like my iPod or printer work just fine when plugged into the same USB ports.

I had a Lexma USB hub and plugging the controller through that hub resolved the issue and the OS detected my gamepad. Unfortunately, that hub does not work anymore.

All these problems are occurring on my desktop where I wish to use the gamepad. I also have a Dell Studio 15 laptop with Win 7 (32-bit) and the gamepad works without any hassles or the need of a USB hub. Its recognized as ga451-usb device. I copied the driver files from the laptop, that the OS automatically installed, to copy over to my desktop, but they were already present in their respective folders (I'm guessing they got installed when I used the Lexma USB hub).

What gives? Why do I keep getting this error? I do have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for my system. Everything is up to date.

Installing the driver manually, again, gives me this error.

I did this. It seems to install something when I 'Scan for Hardware Changes', but upon restart I get the same error message again.
