PC Battlefield 3 Beta Performance With Dual Cores.

A 6950 or 560 is recommended. So don't hold your breath lol a 570 should be alright.

Why is everybody so absolutely obsessed with settings on Ultra? Seriously, if you flip back and forth between settings, it's often hard to differentiate the two..especially when during the heat of battle and you aren't studying watertowers 200 yards in the distance looking for jaggies. With almost every game, the differences are subtle. It's not night and day. And for average users, who don't even know what to look for, they often cannot tell a difference without experienced nerds pointing out the differences. To me, that's a subtle change.

Personally, when I play, I check out the settings and go with the lowest level that I can that still looks good. This helps to ensure good frame rates, keeps my video card from working so hard, and hopefully keeps the noise from my GPU fan down. Even if my 570 could play on Ultra...I'd bet I settle for something between Med and High.

Because the main reason I have a gaming pc is to play games at the height of technology that look and perform amazing, if I wasn't worried about the look I'd get it for ps3 or xbox lol.

When my pc can no longer play the latest games on ultra ill invest in new hardware.

I only built my latest pc for bf3, my previous rig was core 2 quad, 4gig ram and 2 8800gt's. That could handle bf3 but not to what I'd be happy with

Well, I would argue that Medium, High and Ultra would still look and perform amazing...and better than a console version. I will know in less than a week, but I'm pretty sure that medium won't look absolutely terrible and Ultra will look spectacular....and the two will be a night and day difference.

To me, running on Ultra sounds fabulous. But when I switch between Ultra and High (or heck, even medium) and have to literally study the screen to attempt to find what has changed...it makes me wonder "why worry about it?"

Those settings are there for a purpose.

To me that's like having a high performance hyper car and never going over 2nd gear.. The other gears do the same thing, its just better lol.

I'd say it more like this.

I live in the US and the max highway speeds anywhere that I live are 70mph. THe difference between a Porsche and a Ferarri might be 180mph versus 192mph. But the difference between 192mph and 180mph is just not a big deal as I will never be able to go remotely that fast anyway.

The way you say it, it's like at Medium the game would be stick figures fighting (2nd gear), and in 6th gear it would be complete 3d models in HD resolution.

Yes, the settings are there for a reason. Perhaps a water tower in the background will have slightly fewer jaggies. But if I'm fighting a ton of people in the foreground, do I really care about the jaggies in the background? Me, personally..I don't care. I wouldn't spend another $1500-$2000 to make it less jaggy.

Lol ok bad example or your just too picky! Lol

I just don't get your point, if your pc can run it at full tilt and you've frame rates to spare then why lower it.

My pc has cost me about £1000 so far.. So not that expensive lol

Not sure if I have a point.

The point I was trying to make was that I hear people say
"oh gosh, I better be able to play this at Ultra, or I need to buy a new xyx".

But I question how much different Ultra and High is really going to look. On paper it sounds very significant, but in real life it might not be so noticeable

Why would I lower it if I could play full tilt
1). To ensure good, or ever better frame rates when playing online
2). To lower load on my GPU, which keeps down temps and lowers fan noise.

If I cannot really see the difference, why not run lower and make sure #1 happens.

Of course, if you have a kick butt machine and get 200FPS...then you have nothing to worry about. If you have a machine that normally gets 45FPS and occasionally dips to 22...why not try to make that 22 go away.
