L4D has No sound, but I hear other players

I just installed L4D on my PC again for the first time since I've had Windows 7.. I've not had a single problem with 7 in any way except for this. I'm on Build 7201 until RTM comes to Technet.

All my games have sound, All steam games have sound. I played COD4, Tom Clancy Hawx Demo, TF2, CS, and others and they all had sound, but L4D does not.

I'm not sure what is wrong, but my sound works in every other circumstance on my PC except L4D. While in steam I can click on any game, when I load L4D I get sound while the Valve Icon appears and during the credits, but when the main game starts it's gone. I don't have any sound during gameplay. But when other players during online play talk. I can hear them just fine. Very strange. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

right click on the volume icon in the taskbar, open playback devices. there should be a tab called 'Communications', and by default it's set to lower/mute sound when recieving microphone input. set it to 'Do Nothing'. should fix it

Yesterday my friend had the same exact problem. He bought L4D, installed it, but when we managed to get in front of our screens it turned up that he has no sound, although he could hear other players in game. After about 60minutes of troubleshooting and searching forums we came up that he should install L4D again (he tested the game before, on the free L4D weekend, and after it uninstalled the game). Maybe there were some trash left behind, but now everything is just fine.

well I had it installed on my old 7 install and it worked, but I copied all my steam folders over last time I got the latest build, so I just had to install the L4D update, I copied all the game saves and steam files over. so that is possible. I'll try that if above didn't fix it. I'll test it in a few minutes..

Also, single player is boring, is online where L4D gets fun?

Still does not work after setting the above suggestion..

I let the entire movie intro play, it has sound and everything, the minute the actual game starts. It's gone.. any idea's?

    ^ well .... **it.

i have the same sound card as you. what driver are you using? im pretty sure there was a new (beta) driver released a few weeks ago. other than that...

do you have anything set in the games options to mute sound? i think there's something like that in there. (to be honest i never really looked) probably in sound settings (for obvious reasons), maybe in mutiplayer options also.

OK, the thing is you have to remove the game before, completely. Insert the L4D disc, run setup, if you see something like 'repair install', even if the game is deleted, than you have some trash left on your system. Purge local content of the game (if you have more games in steam installed pay attention to what you are deleting). Don't worry about your settings in game - L4D uses Steam Cloud function, which keeps your settings on whatever system you play the game (the settings are brought back to your system through the net). So, do a clean install, and then this problem should cease. Ofcourse, you will have to redownload the updates.

The game itself doesn't have too complicated audio settings, just volume of effects and music, pretty straightforward, so the issue is not in the settings, but in the install itself.
I'm using the latest, 2.18.0013 drivers on my system.

I never downloaded any updates for the game, so maybe that is why?? there might be a win 7 or some sort of update. hahha. also I don't have a disk, it was gifted to me as a freebie on steam.

So I can go to add remove programs and delete it there, and then go into steam and reinstall it, and delete local content, clear all that stuff.

Also, the sound card is fine, my sound works in every game, and every situation but L4D, also, regarding Cloud, I disabled cloud, was that a bad idea?

edit* K I just ran the Check integrity of the game Cache on L4D.. it passed, but it is now doing a big update. I'll try after work tonight. Also I've checked sound settings while in multiplayer games and nothing looked off. could it be there's only a 2 speaker and not a 2.1 selection for audio. Even when I change to headphones and plug em in. I get nothing.

i dont think 'cloud' would cause sound issues. i'd turn it on anyway
(to be honest, i dont even know what it really does, but w/e it's there for a reason)

just an idea, might work, might not. have you tried rebuilding the sound cashe?
in console (hit '~' in the game, of course) type in snd_rebuildstudiocashe (or something simular) just typing "snd_" (no quotes) will give a list of relevant commands, so it's pretty easy to find. when you do that the game will freeze up for a minute or 2, then when it's done, restart the game.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try when the update finishes. It should be only a few more minutes.

    thanks!
