ok, first of all you have to complete the 'dragon rising' quest, by killing a dragon just outside whiterun. something happens and everyone goes 'wow', and they think you're the bee's knees.

the big guy in whiterun, the jarl balgruuf, is impressed and makes you a thane, and appoints a housecarl, named lydia. she can be one of your followers - talk to her and say 'follow me' or similar. there are others, such as a woman in the drunken huntsman, or a choice of two in riverrun, depending on how you did one of the early quests there.

as far as buying a house is concerned, first of all you need 5000 gold. you then talk with the jarl's adviser in dragonreach called proventus avenicci, and he gives you a key to the house next to the blacksmith in whiterun. you can then spend more money to decorate it.
The option to buy a house doesn't appear. I'm level 4 now and have just completed the quest in Bleak Falls Barrow where I had to fight skeletons. Also about the followers, I remember now. *SPOILERS* You can marry Lydia at some point I think.

Same, but that guys Level 4.

And you can't marry Lydia. You can however use console commands to change her class that that of a NPC you can marry.

Oh, ok thought I saw it in a Youtube walkthrough somewhere.
Also, I don't have enough money but it should still come up with the option.
By the way, I'm level 5 now :)

    LOL, nice.

Anyway, now that I've finished the game I just go around killing everyone in one of the holds. It's actually pretty easy when you have a good follower and Odahviing. Just call him and he'll help you destroy the whole city.
