    Images are no 'burden'. You set it up once (5 minutes) and schedule them. Then they run automatically.

    External disk or internal disk will do. You should have appr. 100 to 200GB capacity. CDs, DVDs, bluerays are no good for the backups. You want to be able to reuse the space.

    Here is my tutorial on how to do it. But there are other options. The only option I would NOT chose is Windows imaging. Too unreliable.
