I've got a similar problem. CSS crash while I'm starting it.
    1.are you running dual monitors?
2.What drivers are you running for your graphics?
3.do your nvidia network access manager(called something like that) installed?
4.Have you tried running your game with your sound disabled?(at device manager)
5.Have you tried running a game at a lower dx level? (In launch properties put one of these in -dxlevel 80 , -dxlevel 81, -dxlevel 90 )
    6.Is UAC Running
    7.Is there a Firewall running
    1. Yes
    2. Most recent - I installed Win7 today
    3. I do not have NVIDIA network access manager
    4. No
    5. Yes and it sounds it works.
    6. Yes, but it doesn't make anything.
    7. Exception done.

Another strange thing to this, is that I can run the game by double clicking the CSS shortcut on the desktop, created by steam, but not in the steam Window. Once I try tu run the shortcut under administrator privileges, it crashs and I can't use the shortcut anymore. Disabling UAC do absolutly nothing I've try myself this solution.

    Can you help me please?

Try running steam.exe in compatibility mode (XP or Vista)
    And report back.

    Why does it work?
I put Steam in a Windows Vista compatibility mode and everything seams to be working correctly.
    Well thanks dude!
I'll come back here if I get another errors.

Oh by the way, steam just warm me that it's not recommanded to run the program in a compability mode... can I have serious problems by doing so?

EDIT : Oh well, I've just put some windows in my second screen and CSS had start to crash.

Well as you can see you should close all windows before entering CSS.
    And finish all background tasks.
Maybe you should re-install Steam and verify the cache of CSS.
You should visit Steam support page...

I've always play CSS with a lot of opened windows and I will continue to do this lol. I don't want to reinstall CSS, it's 99.999% sure it will do absolutly nothing and I don't want to lose my tons of downloads done In-Game. I've already try to verify the cache and nothing diferent happen.

Well I think I'll give a shot on the steam's forums.

    EDIT : I found a good working solution http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...php?p=11090950

I have reported tis problem to STEAM but got an expected "Windows 7 is not supported...bla,bla,...)
I will re-send it as soon it's supported! then they CANT get off with that one!

I have tryed to run it as admin, tried compatibility mode, etc but only an update would help...

    Pozzdrav!

Another trick for you : right click on hl2.exe -> Properties -> Compatibility tab - > Disable desktop composition like Vista do.
